after 3+ months of surfing your glorious blog and tog headcanons, I, having a degree in european history, abruptly remembered that catholic clergy (incl. monks) were not fully and legally prohibited from marriage/cohabitation until 1123, and while pope gregory VII tried to enforce celibacy in 1170s, it was met with resistance of said clergy. so while the fandom tends to portray Nicky as repressed and virginal, it actually might have been exactly the opposite? 1/2

2/2 I mean, lots of fics explore Nicky's presumed inexperience and use it to explain his motives for joining the crusades - ie he's so quiet, never had a meaningful relationship or partners, his loneliness drove him to enlisting, etc. but what if he had all this and thus joined for completely different reasons? i dont know a thing about where 11c catholic church stood on queer relationships, so please correct my assumption here, but what if Nicky was never ashamed of himself or wanted to atone?

3/2 (sorry thats catholic history anon here, i cant stop) personally i think it would make Nicky's story so much richer if i'm right (feel free to discard my idea tho). like, why would he go overseas on a suicide mission if at that time, he could have relationships or partners even as a priest or monk? was he a disowned son? was he an enemy of someone powerful? was he just unlucky? imagine how it could've affected his acquaintance with Yusuf & their first months together

slightly longer answer: this is tangential to probably (someone correct me if i’m wrong) one of the first big Disk Horses we had on here this summer lmao which i’m guessing you somehow blissfully missed. 

 for personal and professional reasons, i don’t usually Love the way inexperienced!nicky tends to be written (although there are some really stellar exceptions!! notably a learning experience [E] by @sixth-light which ohhhh i adore) and i’m a noted slutty nicky apologist. so i agree, i think it’s a far more interesting thing to explore!

but like all artists, I appreciate reblogs over likes, and like all artists, my art usually get way more likes than reblogs (even those that I reblog a couple times myself), so I understand the bigger artists’ frustrations
