davepeta...... the thing u gotta consider about them is the fact that homestuck is really explicitly a Narrative. like, sure, it sucks that davesprite couldnt have a satisfying story as his own person, but thats BECAUSE he was structurally a Less Important Dave in the storyline, and he knew that, and it made him really depressed. I love davesprite, but he was always always always going to be held in comparison to dave, and dave was always always always going to be the one more important to the living players, and the one getting real character development. there was no way forward for davesprite alone! which sucked

wrt nepeta..... she had been dead a long time. she was a ghost, she was pretty happy hanging out w her version of equius in the afterlife, and it was really awkward and shoehorned in to have her brought back as a sprite just to make jasprose happy. but u know what? her version of equius became arquius. and the x2 combo of a meowrails and strider bros reunion in arquius and davepeta makes me gd cry

the thing about merging into davepeta for davesprite especially is that it made them a distinct, relevant character again. something seperate from dave, something that could narratively have their own development and relationships. its similar to how rosesprite became much happier as jasprose; she didnt have to bow down as the alpha rose anymore, because she was something different now. neither of them felt relegated to the sidelines the way the sprites prototyped w only one person often do.

also like?? nonbinary icon made from the two coolest characters in the series??? sprite squared cat versions of the best siblings in the series???? kisses for jade?????? davepeta going to fight fuckin lord english??????? what an absolute gem. claw claw meowtherfuckers for real only issue is we didnt get more of them

agree heavy with ur davepeta post lol. i have a fondness for them because when i read homestuck, i was 13 and still thought i was cis, so davepeta was probably the first.. "good" representation of a nonbinary character i'd ever seen. not a robot, (kind of) not an alien, not a villain, etc. i loved nepeta a lot because i was huge on cats as a kid. you get the picture. i still identify as "just a cat" nonbinary to this day, i love it.

but now as an adult i keep seeing the cracks, i guess. it was good for my age, and stuck with me for a long time. something can be profound without being... *good*. if you want to read nepeta as a trans man or davesprite as a trans woman, it feels weird to invalidate those identities with a "girlboy genderfuck 1/2 binary male and female" fusion. hussie isn't cis, so i see less problems with this than i would a cis author. but it's still not fun as a trans narrative to me, so i understand where you're coming from for sure

a lot of stuff in homestuck feels like a joke, tbh. i think its cool on that people can find meaning in all of it, have emotional attachments to every crumb, write lore and fanon for stuff hussie might not have thought twice about. just the nature of homestuck. but part of me does feel disappointed in the later acts of the comic that feel like they're mocking the audience for caring about nepeta or the lalondes or lil hal. different for everyone's interpretation i guess!

yes, this is exactly how i feel as well! if nepeta were a trans boy and davesprite a trans girl it would still be strange to have the culmination of their arcs be… forever getting misgendered because they are sharing a body with someone of the opposite gender.

davepeta feels like, much like all the other sprite^2s, a big joke at the expense of the audience. and even if it were not a joke, being half one cis identity and one half another cis identity is a clumsy look at nonbinary identity. of course i’m not bashing hussie for this in any way, because even if this was a planned plotline and not a spur of the moment joke, it clearly wasn’t meant to be hussies’ one big thesis on gender. nitpicking the work of queer artists for not being “good enough representation” is extremely tired. but, i think it’s also okay to recognize when something was probably not… even intended to really make a good statement on that in the first place.

theres absolutely nothing wrong with people examining davepeta and arquius and jasprose and having fresh new takes on things, saying “what if this was better” because we all do that. my confusion only lies with the like… uncritical praising of these things as the world’s best and most deep trans rep, i suppose

thoughts/analysis of davepetasprite^2

My feelings on them are kind of mixed! On the one hand, I think they’re an incredibly interesting character with a ton of potential, especially in fanwork, but on the other hand they get barely any screentime in the comic proper and pretty much the only thing they manage to do before heading off on their suicide mission is tank any chance of Davesprite ever getting to complete his character arc in a satisfying way.

As far as canon goes, I think they were probably a poor choice to add in. They don’t get enough of an arc to justify sacrificing a character as interesting as Davesprite for them, and there are some seriously uncomfortable implications attached to their whole “I got fused with a catgirl and now my depression is cured” thing. I think they could have been great if they’d been given room to really explore those implications, but they only get a couple logs worth of characterization before collide, so it ends out pretty unsatisfying, at least on my end. The way it’s framed, it’s almost like they’re supposed to be the conclusion to Davesprite’s character arc, rather than being their own character, which is just… no. You don’t get to conclude a character’s arc by turning them into a different character, that doesn’t work. That’s the start of an arc, not the end of one. Not the last one, at least.

For fanwork, though, I love them. There’s so much about them that’s worth reading into, and they’re incredibly interesting if only because their existence has necessary and intriguing consequences for any setting they’re placed in.

They’ve got memories from two different people, without really being either of them. In Dave’s case, they were the spare already and they’ve got a fair bit of trauma about it, so becoming an even “faker” Dave is bound to have some kind of effect on them. In Nepeta’s case, they’re the only version of her left, and the fact that they can’t be her, even while she’s a huge part of them, is going to Do Things to their head.

I also think they’re lying to themself about not having depression anymore. Like, they know they’re probably going to permadie to Lord English when they head off to fight him and they do it anyway, despite literally no one asking them to. That is not the behavior of someone with a healthy attitude towards the inherent value of their own existence. I’d give even odds as to whether the constant cheer is consciously a front or if they’re repressing so hard even they don’t realize how not ok they are.

I’m genuinely surprised there isn’t more fic of them struggling with The Gender Thing. Like, they’ve got memories of being both a boy and a girl, and they decide to be neither upon entering existence? There are some implications there. Like, do Dave and Nepeta have repressed Gender Feelings? Was Davesprite an egg? Them immediately picking a new gender doesn’t necessarily indicate that at least one of their components was looking for an excuse to trans their gender, but it certainly indicates something. And honestly, that not being the case would have it’s own incredibly interesting implications. Like, is their gender an extension of their identity issues? It could be. I’d read that fic.

Speaking of identity issues… wow, am I right? They’ve got at least two different kinds of impostor syndrome, three years of getting called a fake version of themself on one end and three years spent as a ghost interacting with dozens of alternate universe versions of themself on the other, and that’s not even getting into the whole ultimate self thing.

Basically, I just… I love them. They’re wasted in canon but fandom is fully capable of realizing their potential in its stead and every time I find a fic that does it well I end up rereading it multiple times because they’re just such a delight when they’re written well. They’re also the only nonbinary character in the main body of Homestuck and I’m not about to lie and pretend that doesn’t give me a massive bias towards them.

UM.. OF COURSE.. been waiting for the day an anon asked me this. Just a warning I am mentally insane sorry if these hcs are too crazy for you.

Height headcanon from shortest to tallest: Jane, Rose, Dave, John/June, Dirk, Roxy, Jake, Jade.

Rose used to be taller than Dave, but then Dave had a growth spurt lol.

Jake English:

Jake has NPD ( made a whole post about this a long time ago, which I want to add onto one day because I have more to cover ) + Autism. He's also Nonbinary but hasn't realized it yet / Trying to repress it.

Jake is aromantic, I'm not sure if I see him as bi or gay yet.

Dave Strider:

Dave has DID because of his upbringing ( Again, made like 4 posts and 3 artworks about this ) + ADHD. Candy route won me over so I HC Dave as gay, though I also like aromantic hcs as well. He's cisgender to me sorry, his gay realization was just so cis to me. Also he has really crooked teeth and I wouldnt be surprised if he lost an adult tooth or at least chipped some because I also HC that he prolly would lose baby teeth during strifes.

Davesprite:

OKAY I'M ONLY SAYING THIS BECAUSE IM SO PASSIONATE ABOUT IT . SPRITES DONT HAVE GENITALS. THEY DONT ! THEY DONT NEED THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ADHD... I also been thinking BPD because my partner dies on that hill but I'm not sure yet. Also OCD. I sometimes hc as intersex AND trans, but a lot of times I just settle on Perisex + trans. He's just SUCH a trans guy I will shake him around like a drink.

I would also say HCs for bro strider but like all of them are heavy topics, sorry!

Also gender/sexuality/appearance hcs change a lot for me because I love a lot of diff headcanons.

- I'm a big reader and writer, particularly of fanfiction. My reading tends to be of longer, more serious stuff, but I'm buried in writing drafts that are mostly light and fluffy. I also enjoy running and hiking, even though I spend most of my time sitting. I'm a bit of a gamer, but not all that great at it, and my taste in games is both pretty limited and all over the place. I also love listening to music, and my music taste varies wildly. On top of that, I love learning and tend to go on research deep dives for very little reason.

- I'm a bit of an introvert, not huge on social gatherings, but one on one I'm outright chatty. I'm very easygoing, I like a lot of things and I tend to be pretty cheerful. I'm the type of person to ramble a lot about my interests and tell stories, and I love to listen to people doing the same. As a whole, I'm very relaxed and generally happy.

- I'd be interested in someone who I can hang out with in a chill setting, I spend a lot of my time just chilling and having fun - ideally, sometimes together and sometimes not. I'd be interested in someone I could chat with a lot, who'd listen and talk as well. Hopefully, they'd share at least some of my interests, so I wouldn't bore them with my chatting.

john/june/jone: transfem genderfluid and gay for men [she/he/they], puerto rican, autistic + adhd, they love stimming by rubbing their knuckles and playing with slime. biggest spin is movies, specifically ghost/horror films. she can and will info dump to you about ghost busters. rose: nonbinary poly lesbian [they/she], black japanese mix, autistic + ocd + psychotic, very monotone voice, unable to express their emotions well in their tone, knitting is a stim for them, especially when the wool is very very soft. experiences delusions in which they arent human.

dave/dove/d*ve: transfem bigender and bi [he/she], black japanese mix [albino] autistic + adhd + did, has a lot of repressed stims, favorite one is doing conductor hands while listening to music. spins are dead things/archaeology, info dumps constantly over the anatomy of animals. when overstimulated he goes nonverbal.

jade: intersex transfem pupgender poly lesbian [she/pups], polynesian, adhd + severe separation anxiety, stims by flapping her ears/hands and jumping, definition of “cant sit still”, her house is full of stray dogs she found. very blunt and to the point, doesnt take shit from anyone.

jake: intersex transfem nonbinary and gay for men [he/they], polynesian, autistic + adhd + did, is almost constantly in a state of dissociation, brain ghost dirk is his comfort factive. like jade, stims by flapping and jumping. doesnt understand social cues at all, cant understand tone changes either. very affectionate, very huggy/cuddly.
