Hihi! Hope this isnt too out of topic but,

Could I ask what your opinion is on the prohibition of men imitating women? For me, it has always been a prohibition for men to imitate women for deceitful intentions. It confuses me why mainstream scholars and most mainstream islamic websites treat masculinity as if it were set in stone, while historically, it has always been a slippery slope at best.

As-salamu alaykum, definitely not off topic at all! I agree with your interpretation - I think it's more about deceit in general, or even about men speaking over women/speaking for women. I obviously do not think it is about trans, intersex, genderqueer/nonbinary, gender non confirming, fluid, etc people (I know a lot of those fall under the same umbrella, but I wanted to cover all my bases).

Another thing worth noting, is trans people aren't even "imitating" one gender - trans men are just men, they're not women imitating men. Trans women are just women, they're not men imitating women. Even for the people (trans or cis or otherwise) who do 'imitate' gender, i.e. in drag or cosplay or in acting and performing arts, that's not being deceitful!

Closeted trans people (so men who really do have to pretend to be women, women who really do have to be men, nonbinary people who have to be one or the other, etc) aren't even being deceitful, even though they are "lying" about their gender in a sense. If it's being done for your own safety/comfort, as closeting tends to be, I don't think "deceit" is at all an accurate word to use for situations like that.

FINALLY, THE MUCH AWAITED AND PROBABLY MUCH, MUCH NEEDED UPDATE TO THAT NONBINARY COMIC I DID LAST YEAR (last year????? I don’t remember)

I’ve learned a lot since then, and while I have to say the truth is a bitter pill to swallow, it does open my eyes to issues that I previously have not seen nor considered before. Being a cis Muslim woman is already hard enough as it is. But being an afab nonbinary Muslim? Oh boy. If I were to touch on that here I will not have the space to do so, and it’s honestly still something I’m learning about, so I don’t have the resources or knowledge enough to talk about this here.

Yes we still have a lot of things we need to work out on. Yes, I probably will never take my hijab off knowing what kind of things I might end up getting if I did (I could get kicked out of my own house, for one). I realize and understand these are issues faced by nb Muslims like me EVERYWHERE. 

But you know what? 

In the end only Allah can judge you for who you are. And I highly doubt He cares what you identify with. All I know is that He is Most Merciful and Most Forgiving. So fuck what people tell you. You’re valid, your gender is valid, your beliefs are valid, and you can be both at the same time and still be a good Muslim. 

Fuck what everyone says. Be you, do you!

dark and here~ This is for dark skin appreciation day bc fuck all the times I cried myself to sleep hating my dark skin. Fuck all the times my peers would take photos and be like “lol Amna you’re so dark where’d you go”. Fuck the fact that I received skin bleaching cream as a gift… From my even darker father. Fuck all the times my family would pick at all my features and say “they’re beautiful but… If only their skin was a little bit lighter…”

These past few summers I’ve began to soak up the sun and embrace my “tan” and lay outside unaffected by what my peers and family may have thought because I can see my 4 year old cousin knowing people treat her differently sometimes but maybe if her older, darkest cousin goes unaffected she will too. This is for Tahira. This is for Ahmed. This is for Hassan and Hussein and Mohammed and Sommer and Shahd. This is for all my foreign dark skinned folk that struggle between never being American enough, Ethnic enough, and/or black enough to properly “fit” in the paradigms of the black experience. I am a Muslim who wears hijab and I wanted to know if I have the right to use the label genderfluid to describe myself? Even though I identify as either male, female, androgynous or something else, I am AFAB and have always presented myself as female, so does this sort of question the validity of my claim as genderfluid? Because I wear hijab all the time, I feel like I can't claim to be anything but female as many people see hijab as a gender indicator rather than as a religious concept?

anon, you have every right to identify as whatever feels comfortable or right to you. how you present yourself neither validates nor invalidates your identity, regardless of what anyone else thinks or says.

gender identity is one thing, gender (or self) expression is another. for some people, these two things happen to coincide with one another. sadly, people assume that this is the case for everyone even though it most certainly is not.

because people view how you present yourself (and your hijab specifically) as being feminine or female, they will assume that you identify as female. however, they’re the one’s who are mistaken and they have no right to question who you are or how you present yourself.

i know it’s hard not to let what people  say get to you, which then makes you question yourself and the validity of your own feelings and identity, but please try to fight that internalized transphobia and self-doubt.

if identifying as genderfluid feels right to you, even if it doesn’t exactly feel comfortable yet because of self-doubt etc, then identify as genderfluid. even if you end up identifying as something else down the road, own that identity now rather than simply claiming it. make it yours and be confident in who you know yourself to be, identity labels aside. prioritize your comfort both in terms of how you express yourself, your religion and your identity. no one else’s opinion matters.
