ATLA AU, transfem!Zuko (she/they atm, might go by she/her later on) x nonbinary!Sokka (he/she/they, might eventually just go with any).

The AU isn't about them getting together or learning their gender identity (and coming to accept it despite what others have told/beat into them). No, they're already dating and have long since come to terms with who they are (and are both down to fight for the other whenever someone makes a shitty ass comment).

No, this AU will focus on Sokka deciding to become a Drag Queen.

He just keeps remembering dressing like a Kyoshi Warrior. How he felt while doing so. How much he enjoyed it.

He remembers how good it felt to have the makeup put on his face. How none of them batted an eye at him when he wore their uniform. How that was when he first truly began to wonder if he really was a man. Not because of the Kyoshi Warriors themselves, but because he had always had this picture of what a man is like in his head. Someone like his dad or Bato. And training with the Kyoshi Warriors, wearing their uniform and their makeup, it made him question that picture. And it takes some time for him to realize why.

It takes time for him to realize that that picture was changing because she was changing. They didn't fit the mold they envisioned for such a long time. She doesn't know when it fully hit them. Was it while they were in Ba Sing Se, and he saw a girl whom he later found out was Zuko who had transitioned? Or was it when they were studying at Master Piandao's?

Whatever it was, he wanted to feel that again. But she's scared that if people learn she wants to dress a certain way, then they'll expect her to come out as just a boy or just a girl. And that it's not just something she wants to do because the first time she did so made her feel confidence. Made him feel good about himself. Made them start to realize who Sokka really, truly, was.

“You’re a lot of things, sweetheart, but boring isn’t one of them,” Sokka declares, punctuating their point by resting the skateboard against Zuko’s chest.

The only sound for a moment is the mechanical whir of wheels that haven't yet reached their stop. Choosing to overlook their condescension, Zuko covers Sokka's hands with his own before they can move them.

“A lot of things?” he echoes with a curiously raised eyebrow, and Sokka breathes a laugh so light, it tricks the breeze.

“Were you not aware of that?” they tease, faux concern riddling their features.

Ignoring the question, Zuko rests his chin on the board's tail and asks his own, “Like what? Pretty?” It barely makes it past his lips before they slip into a smile.

Though Sokka shakes their head and scoffs a laugh, the setting sun exposes the blush blooming beneath their freckles.

They retract their hands from Zuko’s hold to playfully mask his eyes with their palms, then answer, “Self-obsessed, for one.”

After knocking them away with his board, Zuko points out, “Hey, I’m not the one who watched me skate for three hours straight.”

when sokka came out as nonbinary, zuko was like “oh um... i guess this means we have to break up then :(” and sokka was like “....what? :(” and zuko was like “because im gay and im trying to be a good #ally of course? i dont date people who arent dudes” and sokka was once again reminded of how extremely cis zuko is. if anything, it was gender affirming, as sokka was reminded of how not cis they were in comparison to zuko.

have this random drabble of mai eating strawberries ft. nonbinary sokka

Mai was steadily making her way through the punnet of strawberries she'd stolen out of the fridge when the front door suddenly made a sound like it was being hit by many keys all at once.

Zuko was peeling potatoes on the other side of the counter, not even bothering to look up as the lock rattled dramatically. She froze for a second, hand still poised over the container and wondering if she'd have time to hide the stolen fruit, just as Sokka burst into the apartment.

They always seemed to burst through doors- not due to any method of force or exaggeration, but just because they were such a whirlwind of sound and colour and movement. Today they were clattering keys and a loud complaint about the amount of stairs ("I mean seriously babe, how long does it take to fix an elevator?"), their dangling earring flashing as they swung with the movement of Sokka struggling out of their shoes.

They were still babbling, even as they stumbled over their freshly discarded shoes and into the kitchen, dumping their bag on the end of the bench with a clattering thump.

"Oh hey Mai!" They finally greeted cheerfully, before catching Zuko around the waist and gently turning his head so they could kiss. Even from here, it was warm and loving, Sokka's fingers resting on Zuko's jaw while Zuko kept his own starch covered extremities pressed against the bench, potato peeler held loosely between his fingers.

Mai slowly reached into the container and picked up another strawberry, hoping Zuko would be enough of a distraction for Sokka not to notice.

"Are those my strawberries?"

Shit.

She responded by biting into it, humming at the taste as she pulled the stalk away from her lips and dropped it into the lid with the others, rubbing her fingers together to rid them of any leaf residue.

"Oh come on! You could at least pretend to look guilty." Sokka teased, coming around to Mai's side of the counter to grab a strawberry and plant a noisy kiss to her temple. She wrinkled her nose at the blatant display of affection but figured it was payment for stealing their strawberries and let them have it.
