you’re damn right i love gay historical shit. but, to be fair: most of the gay historical shit i love is not outright gay or supported by many (any) texts. a big part of it is me reading into certain relationships, usually for my own selfish benefit. that being said, here are some of my favorite gay historical things:

lewis/clark: my historical otp since i was a kid, pretty much. there’s plenty written about them, but most of what you’ll find is general info about the expedition. my favorite stuff is the biographies, where you can get some juicy psychological insight and personal anecdotes. most of the biographies do rotate around lewis, but a lot of lewis rotates around clark, so it evens itself out. undaunted courage by stephen ambrose is a must-read, i think. the character of meriwether lewis by clay jenkinson is incredible. one of my personal all-time favorites is i should be extremely happy in your company by brian hall; it’s a novelization based entirely on fact, with several perspectives written in stylistically beautiful, different voices, and lewis is characterized to be heavily-implied in-love with clark.

roman poets: a really great group of characters, but it’s hard to find any good scholarly sources that will dare to go beyond anything more than a formal introduction to their lives. still, their poetry is amazing even to the modern reader, their relationships with each other are vague with plenty of room for interpretation, and let’s face it, in rome everyone was probably at least a little gay. my personal favorites are horace, vergil (horace writes an ode dedicated to vergil calling him “the other half of my soul”, which breaks my heart), ovid, and catullus. because i’m basic. for a great time, read the dead romans society comics by @chelidon.

romantic poets: worthy of a dramatic sitcom in their own right, this group never gets boring. the ridiculous antics are so unbelievable, i’m still reeling and making my way through all the shit they got up to. byron is historically confirmed to be bisexual, having written about his sexual escapades with men and women. the shelleys, mary and percy bysshe, were his friends and we still don’t know the exact nature of that relationship. keats is just trying (and failing) to live his life, in love with fanny, and being constantly interrupted by percy shelley’s massive crush on him and his poetic talents. even just glancing through their wikipedia articles is a wild ride, would highly recommend.

founding fathers: honestly, alexander hamilton may be the most outwardly dramatic of the bunch, but the whole dynamic between these very legendary and laughably trope-y guys is amazing. there are tons of biographies, documentaries, and dramatizations to sift through, but once you become familiar with the characters it turns into a fun game of fondly shaking your head and thinking “ah, this asshole”. the comic i read in middle school was “founding boys”, which i still think is hilarious. bonus: if you live in america, it makes you seem really hip and cool. double bonus: if you live in dc, it can get you a job.

these are the eras i’m most familiar with, but there is a huge amount of potentially interesting relationships that are constantly overlooked! history is honestly so fascinating because you realize that people have always been ridiculous and emotional and sappy and silly and just because people want you to think that you have to treat history like a very somber subject doesn’t mean you should.
