Can you share more about ASL, your thoughts on it, what got you into it, etc?
So basically, I didn’t get get into ASL because of this lifelong interest in it or anything. I was just looking for a college program to apply to, and I happened to stumble onto this one called American Sign Language and Deaf Studies, and it seemed really interesting, you know? And the rest is history!
The program was luckily aimed at complete beginners, and going into it, I had zero knowledge of ASL aside from the alphabet, which I had studied in the months before.
The language had me completely enraptured from the very first class though. It’s really lovely and expressive, and it’s absolutely great for people who tend to be visual learners! The program was immersive too, which helped us learn quicker, because all our profs were Deaf so we couldn’t get away with asking them questions in English, you know?
Our profs were all really amazing and warm people, and they really knew how to make their classes engaging! We spent a lot of time chatting with each other in class, which helped us learn how to sign in a way that you can actually use in day to day conversation.
The Deaf community is so vibrant and welcoming, and so, so, so patient with new signers, and I really do encourage everyone to learn at the basics of their local sign language! Just things like fingerspelling, as well as a few basic signs like yes, no, thank you, etc are already a huge huge help!
