Nonverbalism Pride Flag!
I got REALLY fucking sick of hearing the term “Selective mutism” and “autistic nonverbalism” So I wanted to make a pride flag that gravitates towards the normalization of nonverbalism, for both neurotypicals and neurodivergent people. But this flag is SPECIFICALLY for neurodivergent people to use. It’s for neurodivergent people.
This label is meant to express that the form of communication that is the most comfortable for you in terms of expressing yourself, is the only one that matters. Verbal communication should be less thought of as the default form of communication.
I made a pride flag because I experience ableism towards my nonverbalism on almost a daily basis. People making fun of me for being quiet, only texting and not accepting phone calls, grunting instead of verbally replying, humming instead of talking, or anything similar to those- isn't fun, and it's especially not fun for people who can't help it, and feel ashamed for something they can't change, when the thing people want them to change about themselves isn't harmful at all, and can be accommodated very easily through other forms of accessable communication via writing, text to speech, humming, tapping, typing, or other nonverbal forms of communication like art or emojis.
