“Peace” in Star Wars?

Looking at the original trilogy with a new eye after the release of the new post-trilogy book series, I have to wonder if everything that unfolded after Endor was really necessary. 

Yeah, the Empire sucked. No bones about it, Palpantine was a horrible shitstain of a human being and the government that he shaped after Order 66 wasn’t much better. 

But no matter what kinds of issues you have with the Empire, it was generally successful as a government. It (mostly) kept the peace, it kept trade and transport running, and it united the majority of the galaxy under one rule.

By contrast, after Endor, the Alliance set about systematically dismantling that government, with no idea of how to replace it beyond something along the lines of “mumble, mumble, liberty”. Is it any wonder that the galaxy is a war-torn, fractious mess by the time of “The Force Awakens”? Add in Luke’s very much failed attempt at rebooting the Jedi, and the First Oder probably barely had to do any fighting on most worlds, simply walking right in with a promise of stability and strength that had worlds welcoming them with open arms.

However, if Leia and the Alliance had tried to reshape the Empire, instead of destroying it, things might’ve gone very differently. Leia has a legitimate claim to power as Darth Vader’s daughter, and she’s experienced in politics. If she can build an even halfway effective political entity out of the mess that followed Endor, what could she do with a fully functioning government? 

And I’m gonna shut up now and leave you guys with the image of Leia in white, seated on a throne with Luke as her bodyguard, Han at her side as Imperial Consort (maybe. I don’t think she’d have kept him around long) and the assembled Imperial and Rebel admirals kneeling before her...
