tabletop games other than D&D
I love D&D but I also love being hipster trash, so here are some other options. there are single night games (very short campaigns) and full-fledged rpgs in here
Apocalypse World -- Ever wanted to play Mad Max? This is kind of like it. You’re alive after the world ends, and you have to survive, no matter what. You fight scavengers, animals and starvation in a quest to do something or to just stay alive for another year. The end of the world offers a lot of GM customizing options. Everything is free online!
Cat Hack -- The name comes from White Hack and Black Hack which are different rules/rolling conventions based off of D&D proper. In this one, you play as cats, living cat lives and saving the world. Cats can see the things beyond death and beyond the veil, and fight them (with spells!!) when needed, saving mankind and, more importantly, catkind. Comes at a reasonable price.
Spirit Of ‘77 -- Disco. Dance. Drugs. Death. In this game based on the Apocalypse World engine, you play as a groovy seventies person (or a square if you’re down with that scene) and play through any scenario the GM can make up; for instance, do you want to fistfight the Million Dollar Man to death? In this game’s engine, it’s possible. Comes at a reasonable price.
Call of Cthulhu -- Based off of H. P. Lovecraft’s works involving the unknown and the price of knowing, this game has multiple playing options. Players start out as regular people who find something terrible, and from then on have to battle against the unknown and their own dwindling grasp on what is and isn’t out to get them. This game offers a lot of customization and has a fun underlying plot, or can be played in a serial version. Comes at a reasonable price!
The Warren -- Similar to Cat Hack, The Warren is a game where you play as an animal. In this, you’re a rabbit! Your warren is in danger, and it’s up to you and your warrenmates to save it and save your family, using any means your little bunny minds can think of. This is a fully-made tabletop RPG and can be as in-depth as you want it to be. Comes at a reasonable price.
Actual Cannibal Shia LaBeouf -- In this game, you’re a normal person, living a normal life on a normal night at a normal park. But then, you see him. Shia LaBeouf. The Shia Master (GM) controls Shia, and the players have to be clever to outrun or out-trick him, lest they be devoured. This is a single-session game, based on a silly meme. Everything is free online!
Pokemon Conquest -- This tabletop is based off of a video game, where the Pokemon world collides with a seafaring, alt-history Japan world named Rensai. Players can bond with Pokemon, battle on the seas, and most importantly, try to mend their beautiful country’s shattered state, with battle, discussion, and probably a little seduction. Everything is free online!
Monsterhearts -- also based on Apocalypse World’s engine, in Monsterhearts, players are young adults, or older than anyone, and usually vampires. Will you turn your family, or leave them behind? There’s blood, drama, romance, and... hormones. It’s a little bit True Blood, a little bit Twilight, and a little bit Degrassi. All in all, it sounds like a lot of fun! Comes at a reasonable price.
Warriors Adventure Game -- If you read the Warriors series (or are still reading them), chances are you’ve imagined scenarios for the cats. This game lets you make your own apprentice warrior and play through territory battles, interclan friendships and anything else the GM can think of. The rules are simplistic, and the lore for the universe is honestly incredibly interesting. Everything is free online!
