Telephone Scam Warning

I received a pre-recorded telephone call allegedly from HMRC this morning.  It was along the lines of “You have defrauded HMRC.  A lawsuit is being issued against you.  Press 1 to speak to your case officer.  Your case number is #####.”

It’s just one of a considerable number of scam calls recently.  The most original was from my “nuisance calls manager”.  The reason I didn’t know I had one was that they were appointed by the telephone network.  However, they were going to stop all the nuisance calls being received here.  Please be very careful as some of these scammers can sound almost plausible.

Getting lots of nuisance calls?  Don't switch off your mobile phone! Scammers are targeting phones to steal money from bank accounts.  They persuade your service provider to transfer your number to a new Sim, so your bank's passcode for withdrawals goes to their phone, not yours.  If your mobile suddenly has no service, ask your provider if the sim has been swapped, then alert your bank.  Sim swaps are easier when victims turn off their phones

You answer. There is a pause...

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) recently fined a Staffordshire based company £90,000 for making 118,000 unsolicited calls between January 2017 and September 2018 to people who had registered with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) that they did not wish to receive them.

It is against the law to make marketing calls to numbers that have been registered with the TPS for more than 28 days, unless people have provided consent.

The ICO investigation found that Smart Home Protection Limited had a cloud-based dialler system which suppressed TPS listed numbers, but at the time the service was not enabled. The firm also purchased third party data without undertaking any sufficient due diligence, to check whether they had the consent to call people.

An ICO spokesman said:

[They] has been in business for many years, so they should have been fully aware of their data protection obligations. It is a company’s responsibility to check the TPS and make sure that it has valid consent to make marketing calls. If they don’t, they can expect robust enforcement.

I’m being plagued by nuisance calls about an alleged accident

I received four in one day alone, but I haven’t been in any crashes I am continually getting calls – four today – about an alleged car accident that I am supposed to have had. When I question the caller as to the date of the accident they can’t tell me, but aggressively question me about it. I have not been involved in an accident and am getting very fed up.
