Whilst some entitled women of the West march and protest for values already available to them, the women of Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, Syria and Yemen pray only for the bombs and drones and murders to stop. The USA was “at war” for every day Obama was in office. In 2016 alone, over 26,000 US bombs were dropped. If marching for human rights is our focus we must first wake up and see the social distractions for what they are.

The president claims he is putting accountability and transparency measures in place that will “serve the American people well in the future.”

In the interview, with New York magazine’s Jonathan Chait, Obama expressed agreement with one of the most salient critiques of his drone war, that it risks creating “institutional comfort and inertia with what looks like a pretty antiseptic way of disposing of enemies.”

Obama explained that he had looked at “the way in which the number of drone strikes was going up and the routineness with which, early in my presidency, you were seeing both DOD and CIA and our intelligence teams think about this.”

He continued: “And it troubled me, because I think you could see, over the horizon, a situation in which, without Congress showing much interest in restraining actions with authorizations that were written really broadly, you end up with a president who can carry on perpetual wars all over the world, and a lot of them covert, without any accountability or democratic debate.”

The president expressed a sense of urgency to rein in these powers that seems particularly appropriate given that both candidates for the White House have indicated a receptiveness to intensifying the use of military force abroad, with Donald Trump going so far as expressing openness to killing the families of suspected terrorists.

In the name of transparency, White House reveals civilian deaths from drone strikes

The White House said on Friday that up to 116 civilians had inadvertently been killed in strikes in countries where America is not at war, a major disclosure likely to inflame debate about targeted killings and the use of drones. President Obama's goal for the release of the numbers, which are higher than any previously acknowledged by the White House but vastly below private estimates, is to create greater transparency about what the U.S. military and CIA are doing to fight militants plotting against the United States.

The president believes our counterterrorism strategy is more effective and has more credibility when we're as transparent as possible.

The administration acknowledged "inherent limitations" in its ability to collect data in dangerous target areas but strongly defended its estimates. Critics of the targeted killing program question whether the strikes create more militants than they destroy. They cite the spread of jihadist organizations and militant attacks throughout the world as evidence that targeted killings may be exacerbating the problem.
