Big Changes in West Bengal’s OBC Reservation System
The West Bengal government has reduced OBC reservation from 17% to 7%, with only 66 castes now remaining under the quota system.
• Religion-based classification removed • 2010–2012 inclusion of 77 castes declared invalid following Calcutta High Court order • Around 12 lakh OBC certificates issued after 2010 affected • Existing jobs secured under OBC quota will remain valid
Castes still included in the revised list: Kurmis, Kapalis, Karmakars, Swarnakars, Tantis, Goalas and several others.
Other Major Cabinet Decisions: • Government job age limit increased by 5 years • New anti-corruption investigation panel approved • Women to receive ₹3000 monthly under Annapurna Yojana • Free bus travel for women from June 1 • Religious honorarium for Imams, Muezzins & priests discontinued • 7th Pay Commission approved for state employees
The decisions are expected to trigger major political and social debate across the state.
