It had started off great. Stars aligning for once, allowing Obito to take Shisui out properly for the first time - schedules cleared, missions off the table. He’s been nervous since he was born, but there’s something soothing when it comes to Shisui. Had made it easier, when he’d picked at the dirt beneath his nails and refused to make eye contact, flush burning his face and asking with a damned stutter of all things if he could take the younger Uchiha out.

(Shisui had laughed, not unkindly. Breezy and loud, smiling like the sun with closed eyes and white teeth flashing. Had said yes, of course, like he hadn't just shifted Obito’s entire world on its axis.)

Nothing terribly original, truth be told. Good dinner at a nice restaurant, wine flowing as freely as the conversation; neither of them had minded it was a bit mundane. A shinobi could use some more of it, probably. ‘Normal’ things, like a pleasant meal and the time and headspace to laugh at stupid shit. Made you forget, at least briefly, about the kinds of things that can break a man; whether it’s the blood and the endless fighting, or the struggle between clan-family-village-hierarchy. Made even easier, with Shisui at his side. 

He has this knack to befriend just about anyone - either with his utter charm and quick wit, or by the finely honed ability to make anyone smile. He’s lovely, and kind, and Obito very nearly forgets about his errant woes just by being near him. For a time, at least - distracted as he is by Shisui’s laughter, by the way his hands move when he speaks, and the way he watches rapt when Obito lets his own thoughts slip free, hanging on his every word. As though he were worth the time. It causes a warmth in his chest, something beneath his ribs clenching tighter by the minute. 

It’s a shame the evening went a bit to hell. 

He’d felt like a teenager, sneaking off with a stashed bottle of wine into the forests outside the village walls. Shisui at his side, hands linked behind his head and staring at the stars with a whimsical smile curving his mouth. Wandering into the shadows beneath the high trees to find a hidden grove, just outside Uchiha lands. Obito had bought two bottles, had even grinned when Shisui suggested they take a walk; still he can't shake the feeling of doing something wrong. A feeling that’s dogged his heels since childhood; the perpetually misbehaved idiot. 

(Shisui makes him forget about the lack of self-worth that drags him down to the depths. Someway, somehow, able to sense when Obito’s on the edge of losing his temper or his mind. Hand clenched into a fist tight enough his knuckles bleed white, yearning to prove himself - Shisui is there with a smile, a distraction or words of encouragement. It’s - nice. It’s more than he deserves.)

Moonlight bleeds pale across the trees, lending an otherworldly feel to the forests he knows as well as the back of his hand. Obito sits beside Shisui where he lay flat on his back, head cushioned by an arm and hair shifting in the breeze. Free of his hitae-ate, he looks almost younger. Smaller, even. Like there isn't as much responsibility on his shoulders, like - like he’s just a man, relaxed and happy, at Obito’s side.

He takes a deep pull from the bottle, glancing away so his flush isn't visible. Probably fails. 

He’s working up the courage to lay at his side, maybe even brush Shisui’s hand with his own before he actually combusts, when he feels it.

Eyes on him. He’s honed in on the sensation - Shisui feels it, too; he doesn't sit up, does not reach for the tanto Obito knows he has hidden under his shirt. Doesn't so much as lose his smile - but his body goes motionless as still water, the mirth in his eyes vanishing as they spin red, his gaze sharpening to a point as he sweeps his eyes across the treeline.

Obito thinks he feels his dick twitch. Not the time.

He huffs a put-upon sigh, takes another pull from the wine. It lingers in the back of his throat, bitter as tears. Hopes for a moment that it’ll come out unscathed, groans deeper when he knows it probably won't. Obito goes to his feet in one fluid motion, rolling his neck and shifting to a low stance. He sees Shisui move to kneeling at his side, one hand lifting to form a sign - and disappears in a flicker.

He hears what he thinks might be a choking gasp break through the night, sharingan alighting until he can spot three people in the treeline. He narrows his eyes, spots the telltale glint of a hitae-ate - struck through, a deserter. Another sigh, accompanied by a roll of his eyes so grand he can practically hear it. Two missing nin, two Uchiha.

It’s a formality more than anything else. He can't even manage the capacity to give a shit about why they’re here, what Konoha did to dishonor them or whatever, blah blah blah. It’s been a long day, week, year; he’s more annoyed than anything, as he snags a few kunai from the pouch around his thigh and sends them singing towards the deepest shadows with a flick of his wrist. 

“I was having a nice night, man,” he grumbles as he hears a body drop, scrubbing a palm down the side of his face. Shisui’s laughter dances on the breeze, landing at Obito’s side with a ripple of air and a bright smile. He looks up at Obito with a grin turned wry, single brow arched.

“Is that right?” He asks, sounding far too pleased with himself and if that doesn't make something in Obito’s gut clench.

He looks away, crushes some grass beneath the toe of his shoe. He feels about fourteen again, but without goggles and a loud mouth to hide behind this time. He’s a bit miffed about the interruption, struggles to find the silver lining as he realizes this is just yet another failure notched on a long list. 

He’s too deep in his own head to fully register Shisui stepping in front of him, though he’s embarrassed to realize he jolts a bit when he feels a palm sliding along his scarred cheek. Obito blinks to see Shisui with a ponderous look in his eye, brows slightly furrowed and smile wiped clean. 

Obito swallows around the lump in his throat, is already opening his mouth to say something halfway clever, maybe take a step back (run run run away, that’s all he seems to do when he’s under any sort of emotional strain, isn't it? must be an Uchiha thing) in order to regain his bearings - when Shisui steps closer, bridging the gap. Fingertips dancing over the line of Obito’s jaw, watching him with dark eyes that see far too much.

He has to shift himself up on his toes to reach him, which Obito makes a mental note to dedicate proper brainspace to at a later date. For the moment, however, his entire mind is wiped clean at the first touch of pressure on his mouth, and out of the blue Shisui is kissing him. 

The pound of his heart is nearly audible. Obito goes still as stone, hands clenching at his sides. It takes an extra moment or three for him to remember to close his eyes, a thousand differing emotions and sensations beating down into his skull - a shudder runs down his spine, and he realizes Shisui is kissing him.

His palms find Shisui’s hips, rocking him forward to press into his chest. Obito tilts his head down, closes the distance between them; he can feel Shisui smile, pressed intimately like a secret to his mouth. It’s chaste, just a small press of their lips; but even still Obito sighs quietly at the feeling, and lets himself drown beneath it.

Shisui traces aimless patterns on his cheek, puts his entire self into it; lips parting and coming together again, a lazy cascade of kisses that has Obito wondering if Shisui can feel the heat of his flushed face. Thinks for a moment that he should probably be embarrassed about it, and swiftly shuts those thoughts down in favor of memorizing how Shisui’s mouth feels against his own.

“I had a nice night, too,” Shisui eventually whispers, breath mingling with his own and Obito can feel the burning in his chest increase twofold. He nods, wordless, and covers Shisui’s mouth with his own once more.

Ok ok listen, crack-ish ObiShi AU where Obito constantly tries to get Shisui to join the Akatsuki while Shisui constantly tries to find out who 'Tobi' is and they meet in secret every once in a while and slowly start to actually care for each other in-between one banter and the other

One day Shisui gets injured on a mission and Obito's like "this is the perfect moment to try and get him to my side, he's weak and injured and in need of help and if I save his life he'll owe me a favor" but Shisui is high on chakra pills and painkillers and has absolutely no filter whatsoever and goes on to list every single bullshit part of what Obito has told him about his plans (not much, just a little bit to try and sway him on the villain side without revealing too much) and then promptly passes out against him (like, literally. They're talking and then suddenly Shisui tilts forward and for a moment Obito almost turns intangible but then he sees Shisui's eyes rolling back in his head and catches him before he can hit the ground) and Obito almost freaks out because "Holy shit I have absolutely no idea how to take care of injured people what the fuck do I do is he dead is he dying did I kill him by keeping him from looking for actual medical help fuck fuck fuck-" and he does the first thing he can think of, warps in fucking Kakashi's apartment and dumps Shisui right there and then and then disappears but remains nearby to make sure he won't actually die

He doesn't make much of it at first, but then slowly starts realizing that he actually cares, meanwhile Shisui is being kept 'prisoner' in Kakashi's apartment and he won't be let out until he gives any sort of answer as to how he appeared out of thin air, but Shisui has no idea of the existence of Kamui so he genuinely has no answer to give and Kakashi decides to keep an eye on him because that was weird as fuck and he needs to know if he has to worry about people appearing in his apartment in the future

Of course there would be no massacre, Danzō tries to get his hands on Shisui('s eyes) but Obito kicks his ass to Hell and back because obviously no one's allowed to kill him, Shisui's important for his evil plans! (And yes, that's what Obito tells himself to excuse his protectiveness towards Shisui, no funny feelings at play here)

Cue a very confused Shisui passing out because of the poison and what better thing for Obito to do than to dump him at Kakashi's place again, because obviously Obito doesn't trust the Hokage to do the right and Kakashi's the only person Obito considers having a bit of an actual brain, and Kakashi helps Shisui by taking him to the Aburame (who I hc as Konoha's poison experts because of their bugs) and then proceeds to force the truth out of Shisui and get absolutely everyone involved into making sure things like these don't happen again

At this point Shisui is starting to think that the weird teleportation technique is something 'Tobi' can do, because now's the second time he has passed out in front of him and it's the second time he wakes up at Kakashi's place so connecting the dots is not that difficult anymore

And during the years Obito and Shisui keep having this weird, secret relationship where technically they're enemies and one hand Obito has convinced himself that his obsession for Shisui is given by the fact that his Mangekyō would be perfect for their plans while on the other hand Shisui has convinced himself that he wants to see 'Tobi' again and again just because he's an enemy and he wants to keep an eye on him

Chapter 122: Obito/Shisui

Obito made it three steps in the front door of the hotel before a massive hand caught hold of his collar and he found himself hauled in to the air, feet kicking at empty space and hands scrambling to hold on to the straps of his backpack. He was barely in to his teens but Obito wished he would just hit his growth spurt already so that no one could do this to him anymore. Not that he didn’t know exactly who it was holding him up by the neck.

“You,” a familiar voice growled in his ear, “are going to behave yourself this weekend.”

“Madara-ji. How nice to see you too!” Obito made an effort to twist his body and offer a friendly smile to the looming figure behind him. Instead of greeting him in return, Madara shook him like a rag doll.

“I mean it. If I have to put out a single fire this weekend I will sic Tobirama on you.”

Shuddering at the thought of having to deal with his uncle’s crazy scientist husband, Obito hoped his nodding made him look innocent and pure. “Of course! No fires, I promise! Er, can I go back to the ground now?”

With a great harrumph Madara dropped him. Obito stumbled and hurried away as soon as he managed to find his feet again, rushing in to the venue with no idea where he was going but a great amount of confidence he would find his way somehow. The building was absolutely crawling with people he knew would be willing to help him if he asked.

One of the largest clans left in Fire Country, able to trace their ancestry all the way back to the original founders of the village Obito had been born in, the Uchiha clan had since spread out to all four corners of the elemental nations. He wasn’t sure whose idea it had been to have a massive reunion for them all but he was grateful to whoever it was. Konoha was but a mere shadow of its former glory; any excuse to get out of town for a while was a blessing and the chance to meet members of his distant family was even more so. The only family Obito ever saw was his crotchety Uncle Madara and the frail grandmother he had lived with since he was a baby.

Pushing up his sleeve to check the words on his arm for perhaps the fifteenth time that morning, Obito grinned and headed towards a bunch of teenagers who looked his age, most of them blessed with the distinctive Uchiha looks. Meeting new people was always a delight but it was only half he reason he was so excited for this weekend. This morning his already high excitement had tripled upon waking up to see the event that his soulmate would experience today was “will meet their soulmate”.

As he had for the entire drive here, Obito spent his morning in a state of joy he’d heard referred to as walking on air. Every corner of every room and every new person he met felt as though they were filled with possibilities. He shook every hand he could and forgot more names than he remembered, bouncing from place to place until he found Uncle Madara tucked away in the hotel bar with his husband, both of their looking supremely uncomfortable surrounded by so many strangers.

“Find ‘em yet?” his uncle grunted. Obito shook his head.

“I will!”

“You’ve got dirt on your face, you know.”

“What!?”

Obito spun around to peer over at the mirror behind the bartender, mortified to see that there was indeed a giant streak of dirt down on side of his face. There was no telling how long it had been there or how many people had been too polite to say anything, though it was probably from leaning his face against the window in the car. What an excellent first impression he’d been making! Trying to scrub off the mark with the heel of his hand did nothing so Obito hurried back out of the room to where he’d seen a sign for the public toilets.

The first thing he saw when he burst in to the bathroom was a tall thin boy a few years older than himself, perfect brows folded inwards to form the most aristocratic frown he’d ever seen.

“You should find another bathroom,” the boy said. Obito wrinkled his nose.

“I just wanna use the sink and the mirror,” he said.

From inside one of the stalls there came an ominous rattling. “Ah, let him fix his hair,” a new voice called. “Someone in this joint needs to look good.”

“We are Uchiha,” the tall boy pointed out. “We all look good. Now quit being melodramatic and can we please find somewhere more sanitary to spend our time?”

“I am in the throes of depression, my lowest hour, and if I want to hang out in a toilet I will!”

“Could it at least be a more private toilet?”

Obito inched towards the sink, grabbing a few paper towels on the way. As he dipped them in the water and scrubbed at the dirt mark on his face, he kept one ear tilted towards the voice over in the corner, eavesdropping shamelessly. Movies always made family drama sound so interesting but the only drama he ever got to see was when Uncle Tobirama tried to do science in the kitchen.

He watched in the mirror as the boy apparently named Itachi rubbed at the bridge of his nose and gave a snooty huff at whoever was hidden in the last stall of the row.

“You are making a big deal out of something small.”

“Am not,” the other voice replied. For someone who was apparently depressed they sounded particularly upbeat, cheerful even. Obito noted that his face was completely clean now but he kept scrubbing anyway. This conversation was the most interesting he’d heard so far today.

“Please come out, Shisui. You know exactly who arrived today and if he catches us doing what I think you’re doing there will be trouble. I don’t want trouble. Mother says I can’t go to Math Camp if I get in trouble.”

“Only you would be enough of a nerd to think having Math Camp taken away is a punishment.”

Itachi blinked slowly. “I enjoy math. Now put down the lighter and let’s go.”

More curious than ever, Obito finally turned the taps off and tossed his paper towel in the bin. He decided against making any efforts to hide his actions, instead marching over to where the two others were talking and popped his head around the door before Itachi could react. Considering their conversations he had expected to see someone in the toilet stall with a cigarette or a pilfered bottle of alcohol, perhaps even partaking in some sort of recreational drug.

What he found was a boy a few years older than himself trying to get a flame from his lighter so he could set off the bottle rockets he’d strapped to the back of the tank. ‘Shisui’ looked up at him with a wild grin.

“Hey there! What’s your name?”

“Obito.”

“Do you like fire, Obito?”

“I love fire but Madara-ji said he’d be watching me like a hawk today.”

“You see?” Itachi huffed beside him. “Even he knows not to cross Madara-sama. Can we stop this foolishness?”  

Shisui waved him off, eyes set on Obito. “Nonsense. What that old wind bag doesn’t know won’t kill him. Do you want to help me light the rockets Obito?”

“Alright!” Obito dove inside the stall with stars in his eyes, beyond happy to have met someone who shared his propensity for mayhem, and reached out to take the lighter from the older boy. The moment their fingers met a spark jumped between their skin and they both snatched their hands back. Obito looked back and forth between his fingers and Shisui.

“Holt shit,” the other murmured.

“Doesn’t that mean–?”

“Pull up your sleeve! What’s your event for today say!?” Obito held still as Shisui lunged for his arm and pulled up his sleeve, reading it out loud. “Will meet their soulmate. How come yours is so straight forward and mine isn’t!?”

“W-what’s yours say?”

Shisui rolled up his sleeve to show off the black writing curled down his forearm, which read “will fall in love”. As soon as he read it Obito promptly turned red in the face and clutched at the straps of his backpack as though they might steady him against the embarrassment. He was intrigued, sure, but anyone would be to find a soulmate as awesome as Shisui – and they barely even knew each other! It was hard to imagine how much more amazing the other boy would be once they got to know each other a little better.

“I thought you were going to fall in love with someone and then maybe someday we would meet and find out we were meant to be platonic soulmates! Don’t get me wrong, platonic is fine. It’s fine! But…”

“That’s not what you wanted?” Obito ventured. Shisui snapped his fingers.

“Exactly.”

“So…you were going to light bottle rockets in a hotel bathroom…because you thought your soulmate was going to fall in love with someone else?”

The other boy twisted his mouth to one side wryly. “Well anything will sound silly if you say it in that tone. Look, what I do in my utter devastation is my business.”

“Do we really need to keep up the dramatics?” Itachi asked from behind them. Instead of looking at all embarrassed by his own behavior, Shisui gave a haughty sniff and held his lighter aloft once more, clicking it a few times until he finally got a flame going.

“Speak for yourself, Drama King. Hey – Obito, right? – do you still wanna light some rockets with me?”

“Of course!” Shuffling closer, Obito all but plastered himself to Shisui’s side, a massive grin splitting his face

While Itachi groaned behind them and muttered about leaving so they couldn’t drag him down in to their mayhem, Obito and Shisui both huddled closer to the rockets strapped to the tank of the toilet, giggling like a pair of children. As the first fuse lit and the familiar scent of burning met his nose, Obito couldn’t help but send out a silent prayer of thanks to the universe for bringing him someone so perfect.

Just as the other boy’s arm had predicted, he was pretty sure he was already in love. Finding his soulmate was worth every hour of the endless lecture Uncle Madara made them sit through once he caught them.
