GOD is the Obstructor of Evil Ambition

30 Days of Knowing God - Day 2: GENESIS 11:1-9 NIV

'The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city' (Genesis‬ ‭11‬:‭6-8‬ NIV).

How many times have we heard the statement, ‘God knows our hearts’?! What may seem like a noble cause by outward appearances, such as the building of Babel in Genesis 11, may in fact be idolatry if our hearts are not in the right place, or if our intent is not to bring glory to God.

The city of Babel had become a hotbed for idolatry and self-gratification. Against God’s provision, mankind wanted to build a city (and a tower that reached the heavens) for the sole purpose of preventing themselves from separating. Using the uniform language that God had given them, they set about completing this task. When God learned of this, He was displeased and He decided to confuse the builders by giving them different languages so that they could no longer understand one another. In the end, they were unable to complete their task.

Thankfully, God does not deal with us according to our sins, but rather mercifully. He has various and effective ways to stifle and defeat the actions of those who set themselves against His glory. Since God promised not to destroy His beloved (Genesis 9), He dealt directly with the sin itself (idolatry) instead of destroying the sinners. Understand that there is no wisdom or counsel greater than our Lord. By virtue, evil and wickedness has never prevailed nor will it ever succeed against the word of God.

Knowing this, we should find comfort in the midst of our own attacks for God promised ‘no weapon formed against you shall prosper’ (Isaiah 54:17a NIV).

He is the Obstructor of Evil Ambition!
