hi hello, may I present Leigh's parents when they were younger(mostly her dad lol).

Cathal nepo baby bitch boy, you are a wet cat of a man and i love you. Shy guy, that feels super guilty to be here as every thing that he was allowed to achieve was essentially bought by his family(which includes his marriage).

Also featuring Lunaria's onesided rivalry with him lol. One sided because Cathal finds it hot.

It's very fun to puzzle out the circumstances that lead the two of them to make the(bad) choices they did. Like, hahahah bitch why'd you do that?

sooooo, i was listening to one of my playlists for Leigh and I felt really inspired to draw a more detailed/refined portrait of her Aunt Arethusa(who's a very significant figure in Leigh's backstory). per usual i totally overthought it, and told myself that i couldn't draw Leigh's aunt until i figured out what Leigh's mom Lunaria looked like, gotta parse out the genes that they would all shareeeee for that fun familial resemblance.

I wanted them to have enough similarities that you could tell Lunaria was her mom, while still having the traits of Leigh's dad shine through. I do love the concept of those little features they share being just noticeable enough to get under Leigh's skin.

first things first, these are sketches, but i thought i'd mention color anyway: Lunaria has the same scale pattern that Leigh does, just a shade darker and more iridescent(so shifts into shades of green and purple a little bit). she's also a platinum blonde where Leigh has distinctly black hair, which gives them a very shocking visual contrast. there's also the very obvious leigh has curly hair and Lunaria does not.

in terms of actual structural features: leigh gets the softer more rounded elements of her face from her mom, but Lunaria's face is more oval/rectangular where Leigh got the more "squashed" square shape from her dad. I really liked the idea of them sharing the same eye shape, I tried to make leigh's feels a lot softer with the rounded shapes in her facial structure, and make Lunaria's harsher by thinning out her eyebrows, raising the brow bone so they're more distinctly hooded, and pulling her hair back(forehead power i guess?). Leigh also inherited her dad's more prominant nose, but has a slight upturn to its shape that's from Lunaria.

probably gonna have to do this again when i design Leigh's dad. For now, it's a sufficient reference to start on a more detailed design for Arethusa.

Leigh's mom and aunts as young ladies. it's genuinely a blast writing the stormbarrow's(both current and ancient) loove me some family shit.

kinda weird to draw them all as littol children with the context of their adult lives, but everyone was young once.

also having so much fun with the clothing style of Leigh's family mmmmmmmmm.

my oc Lunaria, who is Leigh's bio parent, is based on both the Evil Mother and the Delilah Archetype, or rather my desire to deconstruct them. I think the way female characters are treated and held to different standards than male characters is a fascinating thing to explore and challenge as a tangible in universe thing, yk?

Lunaria was judged and treated much harsher for the affair and resulting pregnacy than Cathal(leigh's father) as well as her her refusal to step up and raise the twins(something Cathal also failed to do).

All the nuance of her identity and personhood were scrubbed away by the society she existed in, replaced with the label of a seductress refusing to take responsibility for her actions. Nobody questions this narrative because Lunaria isn't that widely liked. It's easy to label her as the clean-cut villain of this story, and more importantly, it's easy for Leigh to do so.

I love a good biased narrator, so having leigh be raised with this perception of Lunaria on top of the personal bagage she has with her parent is very fun for me! like, yes girl, go be wrong about something!!

Leigh is justified with her hurt of having an adult authority figure in her life leave her to the wolves, but was it ever Lunaria's responsibility to intervene? is Leigh being fair by only taking in one side of the story? is it Leigh's responsibility to be fair about this in the first place? idk it's interestingggggg
