Hey! Noticed you took some allergy ask and figured I would ask you about this. I always get popcorn when I go to the movies and it's never had any impact on my allergies, no coughing or congestion or anything, but the other day me and my dad went to the same theater we always went to, and got popcorn at, but when I ate it there was a burning pain in my throat and my breathing gave way. I ended up in the hospital and I'm fine now, but I don't know what could have caused it
I’m sorry to hear that, those kind of reactions are always very scary, and I am glad you are okay now. And honestly, it could have been anything. The batch might have been contaminated with something you’re unknowingly allergic to, or the movie theater might have switched to a different type of popping oil.
For me, it’s the oils and the salt they use. (It gets treated with an anti-clumping agent I can’t tolerate. Same reason I can’t use table salt.)
It could also be a new allergy that’s developed out of a sensitivity that as far as you knew wasn’t an issue. Everyone always talks about how kids grow out of allergies, but it’s also possible to develop new allergies as we age. If you haven't seen an allergist yet for food allergy testing, that would be my first piece of advice. That and stay away from popcorn until you get it figured out, which I hope you do because popcorn is delicious.
