Regarding the OneDnD Playtest and maintaining the OpenDnD message

Remember how Jeremy Crawford spoke about the impressive number of people who downloaded and got involved in last playtest? Well the next packet for OneD&D should be coming up soon, and I’m sure they will try to use the number of people who download the new info as a measure of the audience they can claim are still interested in D&D despite the OGL fiasco. So as I just saw on reddit, a few people plan on hosting the PDF at alternative locations for download to send a stronger message, so if you are not interested in continuing to support WotC but want to plunder the new info for your home game or just want to continue to send a message in hopes WotC will abandon the new OGL altogether, consider finding an alternative way to get the info.

I’ll find any working links I can and reblog or post them here and I encourage other RPG blogs to to the same. Despite their most recent and very deceptive statement, we have nothing concrete from WotC and no reason to trust them, so if you are still interested in checking out future UA but want to maintain OpenDnD message the consider grabbing them from alternative links.

Also if you haven’t already, send some feedback via the onednd playtest survey and consider unsubscribing from DnDBeyond you don’t lose perks til the end of your current pay period.

I just spent 20 minutes trying (and thankfully succeeding) to cancel my dnd beyond subscription. I should not have to have gone onto Google play to unsubscribe, I should have been able to do it on the app. It just kept sending me in circles.

Plus, I couldn't (and still can't) access my other players character sheets on dnd beyond. As a dm, this is a huge problem and was my final straw.

Since it's well known that Hasbro/WOTC doesn't read survey results, we should all ask them to do something silly in the new OGL survey. Something like:

"To regain my trust - and to prove that you care about my opinion - please make a new post on the official WOTC website (NOT DDB) that only says the word "shnuffle-fluff". Thank you.

Regarding the Open Gaming License fiasco, one thing I haven't seen discussed is that Hasbro is explicitly trying to edit the OGL to screw over Paizo, makers of Pathfinder which is one of the biggest competitors for D&D (and available free online). Pathfinder and Pathfinder 2e use a lot of OGL content and Hasbro wants to destroy Paizo using this as leverage. It's not just about hurting indies, Hasbro wants to become a real monopoly. They see the money Paizo has made as money that belongs to Hasbro. Pure evil.

Meanwhile Paizo is creating a game license that will be "open, perpetual, and irrevocable" in response to the OGL 2.0. Yay Paizo!

Side note, it is worth mentioning one of the clauses in OGL 2.0 was meant to give Hasbro the power to stop Nazis from making D&D games. That one clause specifically says hate speech instantly cancels the OGL permissions. Really good effort on Hasbro's part to do that but unfortunately they buried it in a bunch of other anti-competitive nonsense.

Something I haven’t seen discussed at all related to the WOTC OGL controversy that I think is extremely relevant is the fact that D&D is itself a derivative work of Tolkien.

Halflings are called thus because they were not allowed to use the word Hobbit, which was Tolkien IP and not reinterpretations of existing folklore (such as elves, dwarves, trolls, etc).

So they were sneakily trying to come for stories that only used the structure of D&D and claiming they had some say, in the exact way they depend on the Tolkien estate to allow them to do without licensing (not that there’s any legal basis for that in the first place, because none of that is infringing on IP)

I just kind of want the Tolkien estate to step into the ring like, “No, no, you guys make some valid points. Can we have backpay for all JRRT’s ideas you’ve used?”

WotC executives using a front of a survey to funnel our complaints to keep people from communicating about it online is one thing, and leaked information telling us that WotC won’t let employees see the changes we have offered for OneDND meaning that the same is going to happen to our suggestions.

And on top of all that they ask us to compile our thoughts into a survey asking what we want when we’ve been basically been voicing our concerns everywhere really shows that Hazbro and WotC executives have paid basically 0 attention to our actual concerns and has only seen the statistics of money being lost.

If you haven’t canceled your D&D Beyond subscription, do it now cause they only way they’ll pay attention is when the money they get from us is on the line

One thing that really annoys me about the OGL drama is that there's a lot of hearsay.

Influencers that claim to have access to whistleblowers inside WotC are not bound to the same standard as journalists. And even with journalists you always have to take those sources with a grain of salt.

Yes, WotC is still not your friend. It never has been. No company, especially a publicly traded one, can be.

But excuse me when I don't fully take most rumors on this seriously. We'll see what will happen. These are uncertain times for the hobby, and that even includes folks who play TTRPGs but haven't even touched D&D, but don't take every allegation as gospel coming down from the mountain. Be vigilant, diversify, and be inclusive and welcoming.

Otherwise, the hobby will slowly die.
