book rant aimed at nobody besides myself. ages ago i saw [popular study/book/academia youtube personality] compare frost in may to malory towers, as her main comment on the contents of the book. tbf i never read malory towers, but i know enid - ur comparing a kid's boarding school adventure to a book about psychological abuse and religious indoctrination P L E A S E this girl has a masters in some kind of english lit topic i believe and she's out here (a while ago) making this comparison oh my god. anyway. frost in may is a chilling book and i loved it, highly recommend for fans of all things fucked up. i may not be thriving in any other part of my life but at least i'm reading books again

#found out after i read it that it's semi autobiographical......#imagine writing about the horrors of catholicism inflicted on a child. from your personal experience #and then some south east england girl on youtube says omg boarding school... like malory towers .....#i think she also said she liked the plot but not the 'simplistic' writing style #OK FIRST #there's no plot no active furthering of a story by the main character no mystery no end goal etc #it's just someone's fucked up life #she's powerless in it and that's the point #it jumps around in quite annoying ways sometimes #that's my only critique #and the writing style is 1) not simplistic at all #2) it's from the pov of a child #who starts the book at 8 years old #presenting these ideas and experiences through the eyes of a kid #whilst keeping the writing mature and immersive #must have been difficult #but the author pulled it off #ANYWAY LMAO i don't know anyone who's read this or who gets annoyed by this youtube person so i'm ranting to myself #very glad i read that book. fascinating stuff #and to see reviews from people who see themselves in it #is both harrowing and fascinating #used the word fascinating twice oops #but im not reviewing books as a job #unlike this girl on youtube
