The thing that gets me about Up is that Steve flashed back to the performance in season one and he did sing Moments of Happiness correctly once before! What happened? Was it just a rehersal? Was something else wrong about that night that was weighing on him? Was he able to recover, but the moment of hesitation was enough to doom him? I have to know!

I’ve had a thought.

What if every cat knows what the meaning of happiness is, but as they grow older, the memory of that knowledge fades. It takes a strong powerful action to happen for a cat to remember the true meaning of happiness again. Grizabella remembered after she realised all she truly wanted was her family. Old Deuteronomy remembered after he realised the difference between life with the Jellicles, and life without. Jemima didn’t need this. Jemima already knew. She just needed to ask herself, ‘What is the meaning of happiness?’ . She listened to Old Deuteronomy and understood what he was saying. Jemima is a young cat, newly reborn. Thats why only some cats know and remember the true meaning of happiness.
