🐠 Daily Fish Fact: 🐠
Coelacanths were once known only from fossils and were thought to have gone extinct approximately 65 million years ago. Much to scientists' surprise, the first living coelacanth was discovered in 1938. Numerous characteristics are unique to this fish. Among them is the presence of a "rostral organ" in the snout that is part of the electrosensory system, and an intracranial joint or "hinge" in the skull that allows the anterior portion of the cranium to swing upwards, greatly enlarging the gape of the mouth.
How would you rate the coelacanth?
Today on CHUNK! FUNK! GUNK! We rate
the COELACANTH:
5/10 Chunk
6/10 Funk
0-1/10 Gunk
The Coelacanth! I love these funny old men. They don’t LOOK like the most interesting fish, but their history is what makes them so cool! Old man. OOOLLDD MAAAN!!! A good chunk to them. More toward the middle of the funk-spectrum since it looks pretty normal until you know more about it. I couldn’t find much information on their slime/mucous secretion.
Him.
Did some renovations to her retirement home, added some extra plants and resting leaves up by the surface as well as padded the ground with smooth stones so the doesnt have to lie down on the sharper stuff.
Poor old girl is so tired. Im giving her water changes every 2 days and treating with stress coat. Her health has been deteriorating rapidly, and this is my last resort, as everything else has failed... if she doesn't start showing some kind of improvement I think I'll have to put her to sleep. She's struggling so hard to swim and honestly looks miserable now, and I cant stand watching her suffer. I know I tried my best but part of me still feels like I failed her in the end. Im having a really hard time in my personal life so this kind of sucks timing-wise... but im gonna try to focus on helping Luna until I know for sure that she isn't happy and isn't getting better.
I love her so much. She lets me hold her and rests on my hand at the surface while she eats sometimes. Sometimes she bites my hand until I open it so she can swim over it and look up at me while I'm fixing things in the tank. I was so lucky to know this little creature. She's brought so much joy.
I hope she likes her new plants and feels safe and comfortable for the rest of her life, however long that may be.
A group of researchers have found an ancient shark in the North Atlantic, believed to be 512 years old, which could be the oldest living vertebrate in the world. While the ancient animal was discovered months ago, its potential age was revealed in a study published in the journal Science.
But how did this shark reach this age, how is it possible?
According to the New Yorker:
“The answer likely has to do with a very slow metabolism and the cold waters that they inhabit.” Nielsen isn't so sure. “I’m just the messenger on this. I have no idea.”
Rainy day~
