Good for Us
Ch. 4
Once they got the three kids checked into daycare, Amelia and Owen walked to the OB wing for the confirmation ultrasound. Granted her pregnancy had already been confirmed by a blood test, the initial ultrasound was the next step. It was also the part Amelia hated the most because she was always nervous there was something wrong like there was for Christopher, even if she didn’t find out until later.
Amelia was prompted by the ultrasound tech to take off her pants and put the paper drape across her lap. This definitely wasn’t her first time doing this and quite honestly she could probably do the entire ultrasound herself if she was allowed.
“Babe, are you excited?”
“I’m nervous. You know this is the part I hate the most.”
Owen gave her hand a squeeze.
“It can also be the part you love the most— when you find out our baby is perfectly healthy.”
The tech came back in and smiled.
“Alright you know... Ready to see your baby? Which number will this one be?”
“Four. It’s my fifth pregnancy but our fourth child.”
“Right. I saw that in your file. Okay, you already know this but it’s gonna be cold and you’ll feel some pressure when I insert the probe. Try your best to relax and it should be over shortly.”
Amelia’s breath hitched once the probe was inside. She hated internal ultrasounds but understood why they’re necessary early on.
Time stood still until they heard the rapid swooshing sound of their baby’s heartbeat.
“Well would you look at that. Congrats you two! There’s two babies in there. Different sacs so they’re fraternal twins. Both babies look great and healthy. I’ll get these printed and send Dr. Porter in to chat with you two.”
Amelia and Owen were both beyond stunned. Their print outs of the ultrasound definitely showed two babies. She felt like this was both an amazing dream and her worst nightmare.
.
Amelia came through the front door and immediately walked towards their bedroom and into the bathroom.
“Amelia! Where are you going?”
“I just need a minute. I’m going to take a shower. Make sure Deluca is okay with bringing the kids home.”
“We switched cars with him. Are you sure you’re okay?”
“I just need a minute. Please.”
To say Owen felt helpless was an understatement. Amelia was so happy to tell him she was pregnant again and he messed it all up. Why did he ever think it would be a good idea to get a vasectomy without so much as mentioning it to her? Well, he knew why he did it. Owen didn’t want to lose his wife. Each pregnancy had taken such a toll on her and it was so hard to witness and not be able to do too much to help.
It had been nearly 20 minutes with no sight of Amelia so he knocked on the bathroom door. He could hear muffled cries or at least that’s what it sounded like.
“Amelia? Can I come in?”
“No. I’m okay.”
“Please let me be there for you. I know you’re crying.”
It took a second but Amelia finally unlocked and opened the bathroom door. She stood in front of Owen with her head down, in just a bathrobe after coming out of the shower. His heart broke to bits and pieces at the sight of her face all red and blotchy from crying. Owen scooped her up wedding style and carried her over to their bed. He didn’t know what else to do but to hold her close and lovingly to try to reassure her everything was okay.
“Babe, our babies are healthy. I thought you’d be ecstatic.”
“I am! I just don’t know if you are.”
“What do you mean? Of course I am.”
“You didn’t want a baby yet now I’m having two. I feel very alone. I know you’re still here so I’m not actually alone but... Owen, I am trying to move past what happened in Utah. I am trying to forgive you for keeping such a big thing from me... I just feel like the sacredness of our family has been compromised.”
Amelia was starting to cry again which only broke his heart even more. He wiped her tears away the best he could.
“Mia... I was thinking about what I did. I haven’t stopped thinking about since it happened. If roles were reversed, I’d be furious you got your tubes tied without talking to me about it. Not that you need my permission but because we are a couple and this is our family.”
“Exactly. Owen, we are the only ones that are in this marriage. Important things like deciding on if we have more babies or not should be discussed together. I want to move past this because it’s not me versus you. It’s us against the problem, the problem being lack of communication. I do forgive you because you’re my husband and because I know you’d never intentionally hurt me. These hormones are just a bit strong right now. I just want you to be excited about these babies coming. And if not, you have an out. I told you, I’ll raise them as my own. We could figure out the rest later.”
Owen shook his head and made Amelia look at him and stole a soft, delicate kiss.
“There is nothing to figure out. I had every part in making them just like you did. I am excited because I love you, our kids, and our life together. I don’t need an out. I just need you.”
Amelia put her arms around Owen’s body to hug herself into him as closely as she could get. That was the reassurance she was needing. They had twins on the way and they were going to be just fine.
“I love you Owen. I really do.”
“I know. I love you too. I love you more than anything in this world. Also if you want me to get the vasectomy reversed until we are ready—“
“Hell no. We are going to have five kids 3 and under. This mama is done having babies once this pair is born.”
“I think that’s a good idea. We will be the lucky number 7.”
