All that remains: The strange condition in which possibility has withdrawn, but existence has not. The slightest movement constitutes a problem because the future no longer reaches backward into the present and draws you toward it. And so you remain unmoving. Time does the moving for you. All the while, you carry the small void of yourself, until death brings movement to an end.

Failing to properly enter the world is a collapse in futurity. Without developing the basic experience of the world as a field of possibilities, as something into which one can project oneself, existence is rendered mechanical. Actions no longer participate in the larger movement of becoming, and the self is therefore an impossibility.

There is only the body, consciousness, and duration. The body persists. Duration continues. Consciousness remains suspended between them, unable to transform persistence into becoming. Awareness serves as witness to a life that cannot become. It has nothing left to anticipate but its own continuation.

And so awareness, too, feels unbearable.
