Raven Chacon, Laura Ortman, and the Discotays Perform at One Flaming Arrow Festival of Contemporary Indigenous Arts
Kicking off last week in Portland, Oregon, the inaugural One Flaming Arrow Festival is bringing an incredible array of contemporary Indigenous art, music, readings, film screenings, panels, performances, and concerts to the Indigenous lands of the Chinook/Multnomah peoples.

The film has screened at over twenty festivals since its 2014 world premiere, including the prestigious Sundance London Film and Music Festival. The critical response has been largely positive both at home and abroad. The feature film will be preceded by two short films: HUY HUY - 2014 (5:05 min) Director: Sky Hopinka (Ho-Chunk) A deal between two men threatens to unravel as tensions rise in this contemporary look at indigenous language and culture. Set in Portland, Oregon, one man comes from a lower, working class, and is at the beck and call of the other man, who lives in more privileged comfort. THE MIDNITE MINE - 2014 (7:25 min) Director: Jeff Ferguson (Spokane) This video was created to raise awareness to “The Midnite Uranium Mine” on the Spokane Indian Reservation. This is an open pit mine that has been left open with exposed radioactive ore throughout the site since 1981. The EPA has declared this a “superfund” cleanup site however, it still have yet to be cleaned up and continues to contaminate the land, the animals and the people of the Spokane Reservation. ///////////////////////////-------------------------------------

SAVAGE - 2009 5:35min Director: Lisa Jackson (Ojibwe) The first day of school for a First Nations girl in the 1950s is depicted in musical style as akin to being detained as just another number in a prison. FILE UNDER MISCELLANEOUS - 2010 5:51min Director: Jeff Burnaby (Mi'gMaq) A spiritually exhausted and destitute Mi'gMaq man has resolved to assimilate into the ruling culture: he visits a surgical clinic to undergo a procedure to rid himself of his red skin. The poem is adapted by Mi'gMaq director/writer Jeff Barnaby from the Pablo Neruda poem "Walking Around". THE PATH WITHOUT END - 2011 6 min Director: Elizabeth Aileen La Pensee (Anishinaabe/ Metis and Irish) An Indigepunk/Native steampunk short film by Portland based artist Elizabeth Aileen La Pensee. MIGRATION - 2009 10 min Director: Sydney Freeland (Navajo) Writer: Cody Harjo (Seminole/Otoe/Creek/Cherokee) In a future wracked by global warming and controlled by an authoritarian government, an American Indian family goes into hiding, holding out one last hope for the planet's survival. THE NOSTALGIST- 2014 17min Writer/Director: Giacomo Cimini and based on a short story by Daniel H. Wilson (Cherokee) A science-fiction short film based on a story by NY Times best-selling author Daniel H. Wilson (Robopocalypse, Amped). In the futuristic city of Vanille, with properly tuned ImmerSyst Eyes & Ears the world can look and sound like a paradise. But the life of a father and his young son threatens to disintegrate when the father's device begins to fail. Desperate to avoid facing his own traumatic reality, the man must venture outside to find a replacement, into a city where violence and danger lurk beneath a skim of beautiful illusion. Grace Dilon is an Associate Professor in the Indigenous Nations Studies Program at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon. Her PhD is in literary studies with emphasis on sixteenth century (early modern) literature, while her current research focuses on science fiction (sf) studies. The two points are not so distant as one might imagine from a casual glance: (post)colonial studies fits naturally with sf paradigms of first contact and marginalized or “alien” cultures. Her scholarly agenda reflects personal origins: of First Nations Anishinaabe descent, her family moved transnationally between Garden River Reserve, Ontario, Canada and Bay Mills Reservation in the Upper Peninsula, Michigan, USA. An abiding interest in issues of indigeneity or place is easily seen throughout her publications and presentations. She is the editor of Walking the Clouds: An Anthology of Indigenous Science Fiction (University of Arizona Press, 2012) and Hive of Dreams: Contemporary Science Fiction from the Pacific Northwest (Oregon State University Press, 2003). Join us at Surplus Space for a performance by Miranda Crystal (CSKT/Blackfeet) and an Indigenous poetry reading by poets Amanda Ranth (Shoshone-Bannock) & Melanie Fey (Diné). Suggested donation but nobody will be turned away. All Ages. MsMiranda Crystal (CSKT/Blackfeet) is singer/songwriter from the Flathead Indian Reservation in Northern MT. She holds a Master's Degree in Native American Studies, Education, and Film. Her recent publication based on research done on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Northwest MT and in Chiapas, Mexico, "Planting the Seeds of Change of Educational Change; Indigenous Voices, Multicultural Education, and the US Democratic Ideal", can be found in "Nationalisms and Identities among Indigenous Peoples". Her musical style can be described as soul/blues/jazz roots fusion. Recognizing education and music as a powerful catalysts through which social change can occur she plans to study Ethnomusicology in the near future, focusing on the role of music in healing among Indigenous peoples and communities across the globe. Amanda Ranth (Shoshone-Bannock) is a poet and performance artist inspired by performance work that straddles music and poetry like Joy Harjo as well as artists who invoke story telling through both ancient and modern imagery such as Naomi Shihab Nye. Amanda's was raised in Idaho and currently resides in New Mexico, where she was a part of several community theater projects that varied from street improv to black box. Amanda's work orbits the themes of vulnerability and resilience, exploring curiosity about seeds, cosmic patterns, radical politics, the human body and love. She is aims to take a vivid look at genocide and oppression as a means of healing our culture's painful history. Amanda Ranth is dedicated to collaborating with artists who work to expose and involve their communities in art making. Melanie Fey is a Diné (Navajo), German and Italian zinester, writer/activist and Indigenous feminist. She’s one of the co-editors/founders of the Native American feminist zine Empower Yoself Before You Wreck Yoself and has contributed to other zines such as From Hell to High Water, Survivance: Indigenous Poesis, and Stories From Oyate: Modern Native American Voices. She was born in Tuba City Dinétah, grew up in the reservation border town of Flagstaff, AZ and received her Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing from Arizona State University. After her graduation, she lived briefly in Fukuoka, Japan and currently resides in Portland, Oregon working as a public library book nerd. Her work seeks to celebrate the two spirit/LGBTQ community, raise awareness about violence against Native women and explore the sometimes conflicting dichotomy of rural and urban Native life.

ONE FLAMING ARROW: INDIGENOUS ART, MUSIC, AND FILM FESTIVAL (OFA)
Mission: OFA will evolve the dialogue of Indigenous Survivance by introducing an annual Indigenous, Inter-tribal art, music, & film festival to the Portland area. OFA advocates Native expression of autonomy through the warrior spirit. It stands to disrupt the hegemonic noise of contemporary culture. By focusing on non-conventional exhibition spaces & (non/neo)-traditional Indigenous artists, the festival creates space for the radically political, experimental, & emerging.
