Over a thousand years old since it was started by the warlord, Taira no Masakado in the 10th century, the Soma Nomaoi is a celebration of martial skill and horse riding. After 2011, it has also become a symbol of resilience and survival for the people of Soma.
Designated as an Important National Intangible Folk Cultural Asset, it features hundreds of local riders in authentic ancestral armor participating in thrilling cavalry drills, high-speed races, and flag-catching competitions.
