Celestials - Stars with Sentience
(Art by Jamil Gonzalez)
I. What is a Celestial?
Celestials, also known as heliomorphs, are stars that have attained awareness, consciousness, and intelligence. How this occurs is a mystery—even celestials work tirelessly to understand, but it is clear that something within their massive, sustained fusion cores allows them to think. By virtue of being these massive wells of fuel, Celestials wield power on grand scales. Humans would compare them to Superheroes, or Olympian gods.
II. What Are Celestials Capable Of?
Heliomorphologists theorize that a celestial's breadth and depth of potential is fundamentally only limited by mass and psychology. From affinities, to moral codes, fears, and even apathy, a celestial’s mind is what primarily shapes a celestial's capacity. It is never impossible for a celestial to do something, but it would always be a wasteful investment of power to commit certain acts, like obliterating a planet, or altering the velocity of massive cosmic bodies. While Heliomorphs may exist on a physical scale the likes of which few others compare, they commonly operate on smaller scales to save energy and time.
The ways in which celestials interact with the world vary greatly. Regardless of the individual, a heliomorph, by nature, is capable of a number of abilities:
Projection - A celestial can create a physical form, or ‘avatar’, that their star will mentally inhabit. This can take any shape the celestial imagines, and power is channeled through their projected avatar.
Communication - A celestial can easily learn the language of lesser beings, and translate their celestial tongue into words they can understand.
Transformation - A celestial can change their physical projection at will through simultaneous ablation and reformation.
Vault - A celestial can move their avatar against the forces of gravity, allowing them to levitate and fly at great speeds.
Purge - A celestial can channel their celestial energy into a wide array of offensive attacks.
III. Celestial Entanglement
A heliomorphological phenomenon that underlies the nature of communication between a celestial and their projection.
The true form of a celestial is a star. At the core of every projection is a miniature version of the same star they came from. Sometimes, this glowing orb is hidden somewhere within their avatar's body. Other times, this core is vainly displayed in a visible location. No matter where it's located, this core is where celestial entanglement occurs, sending and receiving signals between host star and projection.
Celestial Entanglement occurs on certain frequencies, and can be intercepted. Some morphologists believe it is possible for lesser beings to infiltrate these frequencies, allowing them to communicate with celestials.
Not enough is understood about this phenomenon. Scholars spend thousands of years studying this marvel of celestial nature.
IV. Celestial Projection Culture
A celestial can either be communicated with through their star or their projection. The star is easy to locate, and communicate with, but communication this way is easy for the celestial to ignore; they rarely interact with the world from this vantage point. A celestial is more present in the perspective of their avatar. Celestials find it nearly impossible to locate one another in open space, making them a particularly lonely and bored group as a result. Social hubs have existed, but are so few and far between, that the concept of a "celestial society" is foreign to the wider majority. Not to mention the problem with bringing so many powerful beings together in a single space—conflict becomes inevitable.
Celestials tend to disregard the existence of others, filtering out much of the noise of the cosmos with apathy, until they encounter someone or something, either by chance or design. The meeting of two minds is known in broad celestial culture as a "convergence." A chance convergence can change the course of a celestial’s life in any number of ways.
V: Color and Mortality Culture
Each Celestial being naturally dons a demeanor that corresponds to their star’s color.
🔴Red: Also called M types, these stars are often consumed by thoughts of death, they either face their own mortality or have the potential to furtively outlive stars far more powerful than them.
🟠Orange: Known as K types, these stars are commonly gentle and pacifistic. They shy away from conflict and are typically compassionate.
🟡Yellow: G type stars are sociable, enthralled by their own egos. They have rich personalities shaped by their environment and interactions with others, seeking validation and admiration to fuel their self-importance.
⚪White: A type and F type stars are driven to take pragmatic action on large scales. They wield their powers efficiently, making them formidable opponents and helpful allies.
🔵Blue: O type and B type celestials are unpredictable and capricious. Because blue stars burn at such a high temperature, blue celestials often use their energy with wanton and wasteful abandon. They act on impulse without regard for consequences, even to their own detriment.
Throughout their existence, a star will experience various shifts in color, usually descending from blue to red. All stars will eventually reach a red phase, marking their slow march to their death. It is often the case that a star born blue will burn through their energy stores, advancing to the red phase long before a yellow or orange dwarf ever finishes its own current phase. The lifespan of stars can vary widely, which affects how stars see one another. Whether they meditatively conserve energy or burn it all in a blaze of glory, celestials often judge the way heliomorphs of other colors choose to use their wellsprings of life and power.
VI. Conclusion
In the vast expanse of the cosmos, celestials exist as enigmatic sentinels that shape the very fabric of reality. Their immense power and unfathomable intelligence set them apart from all other beings, as they navigate the depths of space with a purpose that can transcend mortal comprehension.
And yet, even among these godlike entities, there exists a hierarchy determined by the size and hue of their stellar bodies. As celestials traverse the universe, convergences between these beings become pivotal moments that can alter the course of galactic histories. To align the will of a single celestial to the cause of any individual or group would be to hold the power of a godly entity in one’s hands, making them a coveted species of intelligence to curry favor with.
What could possibly occur if it were ever proven to lesser beings that celestials exist?
