Warning! Spoilers for Live Action Fans Below
While for the most part I do like what the live action did with the execution platform scene; I absolutely hated Buggy calling Roger, “Gold Roger.”
Because why would he call him that? Buggy would absolutely know the real name of his former captain.
There’s no reason for him to call him Gold Roger; especially since that’s just what the government changed his name to, to obscure the D.
To be clear, Buggy doesn't need to say Roger’s real name to make this scene work; not at all. They could have easily kept the D reveal a secret with Buggy just saying Roger or even better, Captain Roger.
In fact, I really love the idea that when talking dismissively to Luffy about how he doesn’t know anything about being a King, Buggy automatically says Captain Roger, because of course he would.
Buggy loved Roger as much as Shanks did.
It also makes sense that the Roger-like je ne sais quoi Luffy has; the reason why Shanks invested in the future and most likely why he took a liking to Luffy in the first place is the exact same thing that Buggy hates so much about Luffy and is desperate to squash (at least in the live action).
Not because he hates Roger, but because...
While Shanks is happy this young man has a full life ahead of him, Buggy is bitter about it and it’s for the exact same reason – their captain is dead.
I just think Buggy saying Captain Roger would’ve worked a hundred times better and I’m getting more and more annoyed that he didn’t.
Because for those who don’t know (just starting or live action only) – well would it really stand out as odd or noticeable that Buggy is calling the famous pirate king Captain Roger and yet for those who are in the know, it absolutely makes sense for Buggy to call him that.
Also, with the wonderful awfulness that is Buggy, him getting that extra layer of still referring to his old captain respectfully, would’ve been some great nuance character writing.
Now, I don’t remember if in the manga or anime Buggy calls Roger "Gold Roger" at the start, but I feel like if he did, there’s the simple explanation of - Oda didn’t have the full complete story or all the details at that point.
Which is more than understandable, but with an adaptation like this...
Look, I’m sure for others this was in no way a big deal, but I can’t help but fixate on it.
Because again why the fuck would Buggy call his former captain, the man he admired and loved so much, the fake name the government gave to obscure how bright and amazing Captain Gol D. Roger truly was.
Also, you can’t convince me that Buggy wouldn’t absolutely delight in and lord over others how he knows the real name of the King of the Pirates, because he actually knew the man.
