[Shanks-Buggy backstory spoilers (I guess?)]

something I really really love about One Piece is the subtle (?) misdirection surrounding the parallels of Roger-Rayleigh & Shanks-Buggy.

Shanks is perceived by pretty much everyone as Roger's successor (sans Ace), he's got intense Haki and a fierce rep, he's a respected captain with the mettle to prove it, and he's got that same natural* laid-back chill.

Buggy, on the other hand, is in some ways (emphasis on IN SOME WAYS) Shanks' Ray. The right-hand man, never apart when they were children, but always a little behind instead. While Buggy and Shanks share/d a ton of pirate traits, there is a clear difference between their levels of daring, just like their pirate parents; Buggy, while a hot head, is the cautious sort. More of a strategist. Kind of (emphasis on KIND OF) like Rayleigh.

...But once you look into things a little closer, you'll see that in reality, it's switched.

Shanks doesn't want to be pirate king. He doesn't want wealth fame and power, he wants to be with Buggy, and more specifically, for Buggy to be happy. Shanks is fine taking a back seat. He seeks out back seats as much as possible, which isn't often because he has a reputation to keep up. That brings us to *laid-back chill. It's nature, yes, but it's hidden. Shanks doesn't wanna fight, he doesn't care, he wants to be free, but he can't because of his place in the world. He barely gets the chance. Shanks is not the sun, like, at all. He's the perfect example of the moon.

But BUGGY is a wonderful sun. Bright and flashy. Buggy takes up space and he wants. Buggy does want glory. He wants wealth fame power, and he wants to be big and strong and powerful, Buggy wants so bad to be Roger. And he has the courage, too. He has ambition, desires, a want for something bigger and better, greater than just the mundane, and Shanks just doesn't.

Roger wanted to turn the world upside down. Rayleigh was just along for the ride. Rayleigh would've followed Roger anywhere, and Roger wanted to go everywhere.

Some Things About Cross Guild

...That I feel like people sometimes forget about?

Buggy is a decent chemist.

Crocodile doesn't trust anyone.

Mihawk does whatever he wants whenever he wants.

Buggy knew Oden personally.

Crocodile accepted Bon Clay. (Bare with me I feel like people miss less about Crocodile than they do the other two)

Buggy (hopefully at the very least) knows a decent amount about Haki.

Crocodile's bananagators eat Sea Kings. (Can you tell I'm struggling with this guy)

Mihawk causes chaos and destruction just because.

ALL OF THESE PEOPLE ARE MURDERERS (possibly sans Buggy but he's definitely killed people indirectly.)

Does anyone else have some character details (for any character) that they feel like people miss? Or do you disagree with me (which is totally valid I didn't think very hard about this)?

What Roger said to Shanks after returning from Laughtale was something along the lines of, "I missed you, kid." Lemme just say I am so fed up with seeing people completely ignore the possibility that not everything is about destiny. Sometimes, it's just about love.

Eustass Kid has a grudge against Shanks because he doesn't. But you might say, 'well that's crazy, how could you have a grudge against someone you don't have a grudge against?' and to that I say, yes! You're correct! In order for this theory to make any sense, Shanks would have to have some sort of, I don't know, secret evil twin or something! But that would be craaazy, right? Totally ridiculous! Oh wait. (I could go on and on about this theory if you want me to lmk)

*She's* Yorki's daughter, not Brook's.

Hawkeye was a Holy Knight. (And it won't be Zoro who defeats him.)

Lili's sword IS in front of the Empty Throne. Someone else's, however, is not. :) (Little less confident in this extra tangent but Lili had a Devil Fruit and that Devil Fruit was heart-shaped.)

It will take Law to defeat Imu-- immortality surgery from the Ope-Ope reversed by the Ope-Ope.

The now somewhat-common theory that somehow Buggy will end up Pirate King before Luffy does.

okay here’s the Greatest Hits of my pitch for my One Piece crack theory ‘Imu is Luffy’s biological mother and Luffy got conceived while Dragon was being imprisoned in Mariejois’ (spoilers for end of Egghead):

-the parallels with other characters. Fisher Tiger as a freedom fighter who had been enslaved, Ginny as a Rev held by the Celestial Dragons who had a child (especially with the Bonney-Luffy parallels), the overlap with Sabo’s backstory of rejecting a noble family.

-the sheer lack of information about luffy’s mother up until this point indicates it’s likely to be a Really Big Deal, the kind of thing that can ONLY be an endgame reveal.

-speaking of fisher tiger and also lack of information: HEY WHAT WAS GOING ON WITH THAT RAID ON MARIEJOIS THAT WE ONLY EVER HEAR ABOUT THROUGH THE BOA SISTERS FLASHBACK. THE ONE WHEN LUFFY WAS LIKE THREE YEARS OLD. HM?

-it's sadly very compatible with the shrimp colors sexism of one piece to have a character where it's like. yes i am queen of the world but what does this MAN think of me.

-and why IS Dragon the Most Wanted Man In The World. WHAT'S GOING ON THERE.

-in a lot of ways, all of the villains of one piece are luffy through a mirror darkly, but the childish selfishness that's the same between him and imu...mmmmmm.

-the image of luffy getting this information right before a final fight, and doing that thing where he pulls down his hat to shade his eyes. and then just going '...bigger Mom.'
