No one knows exactly where Veronika Skala was born; and no one knows her real surname- even she doesn’t know. Her thick accent is clearly indicative that she is from somewhere in Eastern Europe; but there’s something about it that makes others unable to pinpoint the exact country of its origin. It also doesn’t help that she is fluent in twelve different languages, eleven of them being ones spoken in Easter European countries (the twelfth being English). People could say her surname “Skala” is Polish and try to deduce that she’s from Poland; but Veronika changed her surname upon coming to America; well actually, she gave herself a surname since she didn’t have one before then.

Veronika grew up in an orphanage somewhere in Eastern Europe; and having been there from a young age, she was always just Veronika. She didn’t have a surname or any other way of potentially tracing down her birthparents; and that very much bothered her (though she will never admit to that). The only thing she knows about them is that one of them had to have been a carrier of the mutant gene; since Veronika possesses the ability to mimic the powers of others. It took her quite a long time to figure out she was able to do this; but once she figured out, it wasn’t long before she was abusing it and using her new found abilities to get what she wanted.

Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for the hunters of the world to notice what Veronika could do. When she was only fifteen years of age, they found her at the orphanage. She knew she could no longer stay there; and that’s when she started hitchhiking and backpacking all throughout Eastern Europe, picking up very easily on the many languages of the people she came in contact with.

After being hunted for some odd years and losing several of the mutant friends she made along the way to hunters, Veronika began to hate not just the hunters, but the entirety of the human population. She wanted them dead. They deserved to die for what they had done to her and her friends. It wasn’t fair that they could get away with murdering thousands of innocent mutants and get away with it. Things had to change.

And that’s how she found herself in Portsmith. She had heard about the mutant-human integration towns all throughout the United States and decided to venture to one in hopes of finding more mutants who thought like her. She found an entire community of mutant supremacy activists who hated humans as much as she did. Immediately joining their ranks, she has become a prominent member of their team over the last year and a half.

CONNECTIONS

Fabian Montgomery [ally/friend?]: Fabian was the first person Veronika met upon arrival in Portsmith. It was through him that she first found out about the town’s underground meetings for mutant supremacy and joined their ranks. Out of all her colleagues, Veronika has to say she has a soft spot for Fabian. He helped her adjust to America and welcomed her with open arms (once he realized they had a very similar view on humans).

Salvatore Hernandez [ally]: To Veronika, Salvatore is nothing more than a fellow mutant supremacy activist; but she does respect his determination to the cause. While she’s never been the friendliest of people, Veronika isn’t really bothered by his presence. Who knows, maybe someday she and Salvatore could actually become friends and not just allies.

Jackson Cross never wanted to be hunter. He grew up trained by hunters though; so it was something that he was basically forced to do. His parents groomed him to hate mutants, taught him to think that they were trash and needed to be exterminated. Jackson never had a problem with them; but because he didn’t want his parents to disown him, he kept his mouth shut. As Jackson grew up, he realized there must have been a deeper reason why his parents hated mutants so much. Instead of going to normal school, he was home schooled; and while kids were getting ready for sports games and dances, he was getting trained on how to kill people with his hands. It wasn’t normal; but it was all he knew.

Finally, after he turned eighteen, Jackson decided to go out on his own. He traveled the world doing extermination jobs for high paying people and helping his parents when they needed backup for missions. He went to college and got a degree in general studies, all the while trying to figure out a way to live his life that didn’t involve all of the killing. He couldn’t stand the feeling of having innocent blood on his hands. It just wasn’t who he was. Jackson Cross was not an assassin.

One day, Jackson’s parents asked him to head to Portsmith to keep an eye on the mutant population. Apparently, they had caught wind of other hunters that were planning something; and they wanted their son to be a part of it. Jackson went, but only to keep an eye on the hunters. He was trying to figure out a way to tell his parents that he didn’t want to be a hunter anymore; he just didn’t know how.

Anyone who is familiar with comics will know who Rogue is and will know how awful her mutation was. Not being able to touch anyone without hurting or killing them must have been awful. No wonder she jumped on the opportunity for the cure in that one movie… Ezra would have done the same thing. If a cure for being a mutant ever presents itself, you can bet Ezra will be one of the first individuals in line for it.

Born into a mutant family, Ezra’s life started out somewhat normal for a young mutant child. It wasn’t until he turned eleven and his own abilities presented themselves that things began to go downhill. Upon learning he had the ability to absorb the energy of others just by touching them, Ezra’s life turned to hell. That meant no hugging his parents or high-fiving his best friends. And as he got older, he realized it meant no kissing his significant others or holding their hands. And ultimately, that meant no sex. Ever.

The inability to have any sort of physical contact soon began to take its toll on Ezra. He grew reclusive and distant, not wanting to get attached to anyone for fear of hurting them. He hated what he could do; and in turn, hated who he was. This started making him actually start to hate all of mutant-kind. If he was a mutant and could hurt people so badly, what was to say other mutants couldn’t do the same? They had to be stopped. He had to be stopped. But since Ezra couldn’t bring himself to take his own life, he set out to take the lives of other mutants, stopping them before they could cause anyone pain.

Lucien Fitch [ally]: Ezra met Lucien after stumbling into one of his church sermons one Sunday. He heard the man preach about how mutants were of the Devil; and given his own mutation, Ezra could relate. He reached out to the minister and started asking him for both advice and help. He hasn’t yet told him he’s a mutant; but he’s started to view the man as somewhat he might be able to trust. He still just fears he might hurt him if he gets too close.

Salvatore had a fairly normal life growing up. He had two parents who loved him, an older sister who he fought with daily, and a golden retriever named Bruno who was his best friend. It wasn’t until he was twelve years of age that he started realizing that his life wasn’t as normal as he thought.

It all started one summer when his family decided to vacation down by the shore. It was the first time Salvatore had seen the ocean; and he couldn’t wait to go swimming. Unfortunately, he wasn’t allowed to venture that far out into the water because he wasn’t a very strong swimmer. To make a long story short, the boy got caught in a rip currant and began drifting out to sea. He would have drowned if it wasn’t for the mutation he possessed. As he went under the water, his body grew gills, allowing him to breathe. This saved his life; but he had no idea what happened. He was afraid. After telling his parents what he remembered and about the gills, they sat him down and told him he was a mutant. Both Salvatore’s parents were carriers of the gene and possessed abilities; and his older sister could manipulate time. Now they knew what Salvatore could do- or so they thought. Several years later, he was caught in a fire at work and thought he was going to burn to death; but as the flames began to lick around him, something happened to his skin, making him impervious to the heat. He was able to walk out without a single burn on his body. That’s when he knew there was something else going on.

It took a few more interesting situations before Salvatore knew exactly what his mutation was. He learned that his body would adapt to its surroundings. That’s why he sprouted gills when underwater and his skin became fireproof while surrounded by flames. It was because he would adapt to fit whatever need to survive. He thought his mutation was one of the coolest things in the world; but his parents told him to be careful and to hide it from others because there were people out there who weren’t so accepting of the mutant population.

Hiding his abilities from the rest of the world, Salvatore went off to college and fell in love with a young woman by the name of Anne. The two dated for three years before getting married and settling down to start a family. Three children later, the couple couldn’t have been happier- until the day Anne discovered her husband was a mutant. She was terrified and immediately thought he was a monster, convincing the children the same and fleeing with them far away as she could from Salvatore. Devastated, Salvatore sulked for weeks before his devastation turned into anger and hatred for his wife and children. That’s when he decided to go after them. He let his rage get the better of him and ended up killing his family in cold blood.

After that day, Salvatore’s heart began to harden. Not only did he hate his wife and children for how they viewed him and his kind; but he started to hate the entirety of the human population. That’s when he learned about the mutant supremacy activists and sided with them. He opposed the mutant-human integration and wanted all humans dead. The world would be better off without them… Though he has started to regret slaughtering his family.

Veronika Skala [ally]: Salvatore has had his eye on Veronika since she first started working with the agency. He can see she’s a skilled fighter and clearly believes in their cause and the greater good of mutant-kind. But he can’t help but feel she’s a bit reckless at times. As much as he admires her strength, he also doesn’t want to be around in case she does something careless.

Scott Strong [coworker]: Scott is one of Salvatore’s coworkers at the construction site. He doesn’t really like the younger man for multiple reasons; but the main reason has to be how good he is at the job. He knows Scott is hiding something because no one can be that skilled at construction; and he’ll figure it all out someday.

David Conners was born in Los Angeles to Mark and Corinn Conners. His father was police chief of the LAPD; and his mother was a forensic scientist. Growing up, David had always wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. He would read every crime novel, help out with his father’s smaller cases, and keep the radio glued to his ear in case trouble came along. Life for David seemed perfect. When he was ten, he started figuring out that he could hear what other people were thinking, even if they hadn’t put those thoughts into words. He figured it was just a fluke, that maybe he was lucky and was able to guess. But when he started to listen to what random people on the street were saying in their head, David knew something was wrong.

David tried to control the fact that he could read people’s minds. He didn’t want to be one of the people that the world feared. He heard all the news reports about what people did to mutants, how they mocked them and hurt them, sometimes even killing them and their families. David was terrified about what would happen if someone found out; but he was even more scared about what his father would think. Finally, David told his father what was going on with him; and instead of yelling or calling his son a freak, Mark took David into his arms and told him it was alright. Mark’s father was a mutant; the gene must have skipped him because his mother was human but now David had it. David was relieved that his father still wanted him; although he knew that he had to hid his secret.

After telling his father, David started to relax a bit more in his life. As he grew older, he started to realize how having this power would come in handy. He was able to see which girls were interested in him, what the answers to the test were, when exactly things were going to go wrong. And he loved it. David started to abuse his power more and more, training and becoming stronger, till he was able to start planting ideas into people’s heads. All he had to do was focus hard enough and he could make them do whatever he wanted them to do. He thought he was king of the world.

One day, David’s father caught him using his powers on someone from school, making them act like a fool just because they had taken David’s parking spot. Mark set his son down and told him how his grandfather died because he had been careless and got caught using his powers. Mark urged David to be a better person saying “with the way things are in this world, I would hate to lose my son because of his stupid high school games.” David realized his dad was right; and decided to do better.

After high school, David ended up going into the police academy and getting a job with the LAPD. He worked alongside his father for almost three years until he chose to go on assignment and work at Portsmouth Police Department to keep everything calm in the town. David is very much for mutant and human integration and is hoping that with him being in town, they might be able to keep the unrest at a minimum.

Anya Morgan [coworker]: When Anya first joined the force, David hated her. She was high strung, stubborn, and never listened. While he used his powers to get information out of suspects, Anya would chastise him and tell him to use a different method. David always tries to act like he doesn’t care about the girl, but slowly she is starting to grow on him. She just doesn’t need to know that.

Carter Ross [coworker]: To put it simply, David can’t stand Carter. He sees him as arrogant and irritating; and he misses the way the station was before the newbie arrived. He tries to not have to deal with Carter very much; and he very much loathes the day he’ll get stuck working with him on some assignment.

He went from focusing his anger on her mother to focusing it on Kristen. He never touched her, but his words hurt more than if he had physically hit her. 

She managed to get out of the house when she hit eighteen and got a job as a waitress. With time, she made friends who were like her. And, like her, were also scared of what people would do if the fact that they existed came out. Fear made people do horrible things and so Kristen prepared. She got herself a place in a bad neighborhood, big enough to host teenagers who, like her, had had to run away. She made contacts. She suddenly found herself the leader of a faction and wanting to create a better future for the mutants that came after her. Skills: She can create mirages that seem completely real. He made use of it to his advantage, though not for anything malicious. Until he started hearing people's thoughts about people like him, people with abilities. They weren't good thoughts and he soon realized he needed to prepare, because a war was brewing and he wasn't going to be on the losing side. 

He started recruiting people. At first they were just friends with abilities that met up to offer help and comfort to each other. But when people started disappearing, it transformed into so much more. They're now one of the leading factions and Jonah plans on taking over and turning things around.
