Do you think we'll ever see a new optical disc format to succeed Blu-Ray?

Technically we already have one:

Ultra HD Blu-Ray is a format released in 2016, to add higher definition to blu-ray. It's not playable in blu-ray players, you need a Ultra HD Blu-Ray player, like the PS5 (The PS4 can play regular blu-rays, but not UHD Blu-Ray).

But I don't expect we'll see more consumer formats after this. Streaming is too dominant, it's not gonna make sense to go back.

And I don't think we're seeing more professional formats again. As of 2023, Sony has discontinued the Optical Disc Archive (last updated in 2020), which was the final holdout.

Flash storage is just too big and cheap now. Optical media is now in the position floppy disks were in the early 2000s: They were clearly on the way out but not 100% dead yet.

(Tape, of all things, has a brighter media format than optical, since LTO is still coming out, with the latest upgrade in 2023)
