In this terraced hotel garden, on Shetland, the flowers of oriental poppies were providing colourful splashes of red and pink. The single, bowl-shaped, salmon-pink flowers were Papaver (Oriental Group) 'Prinzessin Victoria Louise' (oriental poppy) which is a vigorous clump forming perennial. These poppies are summer deciduous after flowering.

The distinctive flower buds of Papaver orientale 'Nanum Flore Pleno' (double-flowered oriental poppy) are as wonderful as the flowers. This herbaceous perennial is a useful addition to a cottage garden but they may leave a gap in the border as they are summer dormant.

The delicate pink flowers of Papaver (Oriental Group) 'Prinzessin Victoria Louise' (oriental poppy) have contrasting black spots within the petal. Here they are placed at the front of this border at the entrance to a rose garden. This is a robust herbaceous perennial that forms a low clump of coarse, hairy leaves, and usually becomes dormant, disappearing completely by late summer.

Growing in a flower border outside a farmhouse on Papa Westray, Orkney, this vibrant poppy was probably Papaver (Oriental Group) 'Türkenlouis' (oriental poppy). The deeply fringed petals and bright red of the flowers made this herbaceous perennial a real showstopper at this time of year.

Sometimes a plant is more dramatic before the flowers emerge as I discovered on visiting my friend’s front garden where Papaver orientale 'Fireball' (oriental poppy) was producing a mass of silvery flower buds. This herbaceous perennial will grow in a range of soils and is summer dormant (dying back after flowering in early summer).
