The 97th Academy Awards took place Sunday night at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Here are some highlights and a list of some of this year’s Oscar winners!
Heartwarming moments
Iranian filmmakers Hossein Molayemi and Shirin Sohani took to the stage to accept their award, passing a phone a speech written on it between them. They landed on US soil a few hours before the ceremony started as they couldn’t get their visa approved till the last second. Their film In the Shadow of the Cypress, which won best animated short film, has no dialogue and is about a former captain who is suffering from PTSD "We are going to dedicate our award just to the fact we managed to make this film under the extraordinary circumstances of our country; until yesterday we hadn't obtained our visa and now we are standing here with this statuette in our hands."
Surprising Oscar Snub!
The Latvian film ‘Flow’ beats off competition from the likes of favourites Wild Robot and Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl Flow follows a cat dog,capybyra, bird and lemur in a world without people, as they try to survive as the water level rises dangerously around them The recipients explain that it's the first film from Latvia to be nominated.
Cute Moment
In his acceptance speech, Kieran Culkin said his wife promised him a fourth child if he wins an Oscar. Addressing his wife Jazz Charton in the audience as “oh ye of little faith”, Culkin held up his Oscar and said: “Let’s get cracking on those kids”.
Historic moment
Paul Tazewell also won the Best Costume Oscar for his work on Wicked. Tazewell made Academy Awards history by becoming the first Black man to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design.
Anora Oscar Sweep
"Anora" won big at the 2025 Oscars Sunday night, taking home five awards, including best picture and best director, at the 97th Academy Awards. The award for best actress went to Mikey Madison, who played the title role in "Anora.”
