I’m not someone who thinks otome or otome-adjacent games need a male MC or female LI to fill an inclusive quota, but I think you’re being obtuse if you act like a game being aimed at women somehow automatically makes the game or its setup any less misogynistic.

Obey Me marketed itself as inclusive because the MC was gender-neutral, yet the fandom foamed at the mouth like rabid dogs when Thirteen was introduced, despite nothing in the game’s world or writing conflicting with her existence. Even though, it continued the idea that the game was truly for everyone, but the developers ultimately caved to the misogynistic backlash from fans who treated her like she deserved to be hung, drawn, and quartered simply for existing.

Twisted Wonderland takes place in a setting where, from what we know of, all the most prestigious magic schools excludes women from attending, and the story does absolutely nothing with that fact. Meanwhile, the female characters who do appear are tools for the development of the main male cast.

Mystic Messenger went so far as to create two fully designed female characters with sprites, only to portray them as shallow gold-digging bitches so the player could feel superior to them when Jumin picked MC.
