Day 3. 3.27.20
April wrap-up 📚 Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys - my third book by Ruta, but not my favourite. I loved the New Orleans setting, it was very atmospheric and it felt very real. The characters were great, Jo was a very strong character, just like we are used to in Ruta’s books. I love how she was fierce, determined, willing to draw on her “feminine” power to get what she wanted. I really enjoyed the mystery element, though it was clear from the midpoint of the book who was the killer, it was still fun to see the know unfurl. Very enjoyable, quick, fast-paced read. ✨ Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire - I have heard so many great things about this book and this series, and it did not disappoint. It was a bit too short, but I think it managed to deliver the story it meant to tell. There’s more books in the series with some of the side characters, and I’m looking forward to learning more about them. I really enjoyed the diversity of this book, especially the asexual rep, even though the introduction of the topic was a bit clumsy and info-dumpy. Blame that on the lack of aromantic/asexual awareness. ✨ The Midnight Heir by Cassandra Clare (novella) - short and sweet, introduction to James Herondale and, at the time of the novella’s coming out, a look into Will and Tessa’s life as a married couple. And Magnus Bane is as iconic as always. ✨ Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare - I already love these characters so much!!! I believe this is Cassie’s best work yet, both plot and writing-wise. Even tough it took a bit longer to get to the action, there’s so many characters that had to be introduced which excuses the slow start a bit. ✨ The Mayor of Casterbridge - very enjoyable, very readable! i wouldn’t start here with reading Hardy, I still think Far From the Madding Crowd is better to begin with, but who am I to tell, this was only my second Hardy 😊 #books #bookstagram #wrapup #outoftheeasy #chainofgold #everyheartadoorway #themidnightheir #themayorofcasterbridge #thomashardy #classicliterature https://www.instagram.com/p/B_pzCI2g_9N/?igshid=160kce8y5yaww
“We all laced together - a brothel madam, an English professor, a mute cook, a quadroon cabbie, and me, the girl carrying a bucket of lies and throwing them like confetti.” - Ruta Sepetys 🥀 #books #bookstagram #outoftheeasy #rutasepetys #historicalfiction https://www.instagram.com/p/B-96Hb1Atr0/?igshid=1t9njrjiv2cl3
Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys is a story about finding your place in the world, regardless of your heritage. Josie Moraine is a seventeen year old girl living in the French Quarter, of New Orleans, in the 1950s. Josie has pretty much been living on her own since she was 12. Josie has only a few friends and spends most of her time reading or working. Josie’s mom is a prostitute at the local brothel and has always been more interested in men and money than being a mother. Willie, the madam running the brothel, has become a mother figure to Josie in the past decade. Willie believes that Josie has the potential to do something great with her life, but at the same time is afraid of Josie moving on with her life. Josie dreams of leaving New Orleans for college. Josie’s mother, Louise, has gotten herself involved with a dangerous man. A tourist is murdered and the police are questioning everyone. Josie has started keeping secrets, she’s no longer sure who she’s protecting – herself, Willie, or her mother. This book was fantastic and pulls you in with the first sentence. Many of the characters were memorable- each one draws you into their lives and you don’t want to leave. The Fountains of Silence ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ @rutasepetysauthor has done it again. The Fountains of Silence is a stunning story that explores post-civil war Spain. Like Ruta’s other books, The Fountains of Silence delves into little known moments of history and tells a beautiful story full of tragedy, love, and hope. The Fountains of Silence will be released October 1st! I highly recommend you pick it up! Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys. One of the better historical fiction / realistic fiction books I’ve read recently, about New Orleans in the 50s. Next to my Elvis snow globe :). #outoftheeasy#rutasepetys #book#books#bookstagram#bookish#bookblr#booktube#reading#historicalfiction#1950s#neworleans#pinkbooks#woodfloor#snowglobe#elvispresley#igreads https://www.instagram.com/p/BxrYD9WhuKE/?igshid=fw4ditz7th3j
