But the truth is, I'm shaking—right now writing this letter. My hand is shaking while I write. It's saying what I can't say—this is the way I say it.

Tree and Sun
Every villain needs a plausible deniability scapegoat. “God” failed at that, too.
Seven things I have felt like in the morning
1. Like a tongue, absent any other context, found washed up on the sandy shores of a mysterious island in the Aegean.
2. Like I am inhabiting a smaller, Faberge-egg style morning stored within the first one; somewhat after the manner of those tiny eggs that are occasionally found inside bigger eggs when the chicken's production line has backed up. In the little morning it is close and warm and drowsy and a brilliant blue lacquer sky can be glimpsed through the curtains.
3. Like an abandoned car, but only the picturesque sort which has been abandoned in a forest and is not burnt out and there is an attractive tree growing out of one of the seats, but you know the local authorities are still going to come and take it away anyway just as soon as the tow truck person comes off sick leave.
4. Like a word that used to be stored in an author's brain but has recently been knocked loose into some phlegmy tube or other, where it has been sitting around perplexed and lost and causing an inflammatory reaction which just serves to generate more phlegm.
5. Like the building site of my mouth has been plagued by inadequate supervision and health and safety breaches. Now it looks like the roof might have to be redone. There is also some kind of issue with planning permission and all the architraves that have been ordered are five centimetres too wide.
6. Like a primal ball of productivity has passed over in the night and all my dream selves sat out on the lawn, watching it spark across the sky and eating crisps. As a consequence, all my dream selves are sleeping in and I will have to tackle the day in a more prosaic fashion than is ideal.
7. Like an overwrought metaphor that has been stretched too far, ending up flaccid in the middle and bulked out with cheap filler, but which is nevertheless welcome in the sentence club because of its fashionable overabundance of hyperbole and the absence of a good editor.

October 1st
I want to raze September.
Burn it in effigy for what comes next,
and what has come before.
An empty street doesn’t deserve the words
that I’ll scribble down as I beat the sidewalk,
with my old pair of shoes.
Have we thought about each other today?
Or are we still playing a coy game
of never letting the other cross our minds.
Staying preoccupied with spiced tea,
and little moments of ‘I don’t care’.
