The one place Delaney had ironically began to feel like she belonged was at her work. She was around seemingly like minded people, and could just focus on the task that was in front of her. Being at home was a bore, especially if she was by herself. That’s why she’d tried to pull down some walls, make conversation with people if they tried. Albeit awkward, it was more than what she used to do. Usually Delaney would clock in, work and then clock out. Now she goes through the motions, makes small talk with people she walks by and if she’s feeling really adventurous, Delaney would talk to people in the lunch room. It exhausted her though -- they all seemed to talk about superficial crap. How they were trying to save up money for the perfect car, perfect house -- perfect fake tits for their girlfriend. None of this mattered to her, as Delaney knew what it was like to have scraps for food and a bed.
Halfway through her shift, back aching and stomach growling was when Delaney decided to take her break. For a guy who had a lot of money, it didn’t take her long to realise that her boss could’ve set up a better work place for them. Padding through the building to the back lot, home to people smoking on their break or arguing on the phone with their spouses, Delaney threw her backpack onto the lunch table. She didn’t have many valuables on her, mostly just her smoke tin, wallet and apartment keys. Simplicity, she thought, and less for someone to steal. The one thing she didn’t keep in there, out of fear of it going bad, was her food. Bee-lining straight to the fridge, Delaney opened it out of anticipation. She’d been dreaming about it since she packed it the night before, but was only met with disappointment. Brow furrowed and stomach more than unhappy, Laney slammed the door close and made her way to the first place that came to mind -- Ian.
