Talamanca’s glass frog (Hyalinobatrachium talamancae) is among those glass frog species where the male actively guards his eggs masses until they hatch and tadpoles fall into the stream below. This one is among the amazing species I saw while being at @veragua_rainforestcr last July. #hyalinobatrachium #amphibian #wetskin #parentalcare #frog #treefrog #glassfrog #picoftheday #herps #herpsofinstagram @ilcp_photographers (at Veragua Rainforest Research & Adventure Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CicjObkKcRY/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Some things this next week will be here to test your patience. Whether, it’s issues that are arising with elders in your life or quite possibly with anyone who is facing medical challenges in your life. Here is to remembering that you can not care for others if your cup is not full itself. Asking for help is OKAY. Taking a mental break is OKAY. Being a caregiver in ANY capacity is never an easy task and usually takes a village that most don’t want to admit. Life is meant to be lived and loved and remaining strong through the process required lots of faith and hope for everything to work out. Lean on friends. Lean on professionals. Take a long hot bath. A stroll in the crisp air of morning or night. This week, healing any relationships with those in our lives is MUCH NEEDED but remembering that it’s a two way street and that if effort is not shown it is okay to change your mind and retreat. This week though focus on healing relations, it’s never our wish to pass away with riffs between each other. Sometimes the weight of the world seems to be on your shoulders, yet you know that it’s making you more strong! Forgive what once was, it may bring more joy into your life than ever before. #WeeklyEnergy #WeeklyGuidance #EmotionalHealing #IntuitiveGuidance #IntuitiveHealing #EnergyHealing #CollectiveConscious #VibrateHigher #ParentalCare #CareGiver #StayStrong #KeepTheFaith #ChangingYourMind #SoulFullWellness #NYS #NourishYourSoul https://www.instagram.com/p/Bq5ETgTnsq7/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1uqpqibgtyb7u
Striped Poison-dart frog (Phyllobates lugubris) male carrying some of its own tadpoles to a suitable rearing pool into the rainforest. This species shows uniparental male care, so only the father cares for the eggs and tadpoles while they’re developing into very small water reservoirs into the rainforest. It can rehydrate them if the water is becoming scarce, or carry the tadpoles in small groups to other locations when needed. #amphibian #parentalcare #frog #herp #phyllobates #dendrobatidae #poisondartfrog #panama @ilcp_photographers @goherpingpanama https://www.instagram.com/p/B70g13IKwQL/?igshid=1ukebaykjr07j
As in a tiny little fortress, this male harvestman (Quindina cf. burbayar) from Panama is defending its eggs and maybe even other ones from a previous male! In this kind of harvestmen, the males often take over an abandoned fortress because it’s easier to attract females and they can save energies avoiding building a new one. They then indifferently care for their own eggs and those which were already there, probably because it increases both their chances to mate and the survival rate of each single egg (more eggs, less chances for each one to be stolen by intruders). #harvestman #opiliones #quindina #panama #rainforest #biodiversity #parentalcare #father #fortress #pickoftheday https://www.instagram.com/p/B5Ta9A5Ke_Q/?igshid=blsfw0xucxkn

What to Expect After Surgery: A Complete Home Recovery Checklist for Elderly Parents
Watching an elderly parent go through a surgical procedure—whether it is a planned knee replacement, a cardiac intervention, or standard cataract surgery—is an incredibly stressful experience for working families.
As a working professional balancing corporate deadlines and family responsibilities, your immediate challenge begins after discharge. Managing the logistics while ensuring your aging parents recover safely at home can quickly trigger immense caregiver anxiety.
Seniors heal differently than younger adults. Minor setbacks at home can lead to unnecessary complications if not managed proactively. This complete post-surgery home recovery checklist ensures you can construct a foolproof, comfortable, and stress-free healing environment for your parents.
1. The Post-Surgery Home Environment Setup
Hospital discharge teams move fast, and the responsibility shifts to the family the moment your parent arrives home. Before they step through the door, your primary task is transforming their living space into a low-stress recovery zone.
Clear the Walkways: Post-operative groggy states and pain medications severely impair balance. Remove loose rugs, stray electrical wires, and low stool furniture from the pathways connecting the bedroom to the bathroom.
The Bedside Command Center: Keep emergency phone numbers, prescription charts, a digital thermometer, a pulse oximeter, and a stable water flask within arm's reach of their pillows.
Simplify Maintenance: Post-surgery hygiene requires an environment free from dust and clutter, but your parents won't have the energy for extensive daily household dusting or heavy laundry management. Consider setting up a low-maintenance living area with easy-to-wipe, durable surfaces to protect their physical energy baseline.
2. Managing the Medication and Wound Care Schedule
The absolute backbone of a successful surgical recovery is complete compliance with the surgeon's discharge summary.[The Critical Recovery Protocol] - Pain Management -> Administer doses BEFORE pain peaks to maintain comfort - Antibiotic Tracking -> Complete the full course to eliminate post-op infection risks
Create a Visual Medication Chart: Do not rely on scribbled doctor notes. Map out morning, afternoon, and evening doses clearly on a whiteboard or a shared digital spreadsheet.
Wound Tracking: Inspect dressing lines daily for sudden redness, swelling, or fluid leakage. If your parent underwent major orthopedic surgery, tracking healing timelines closely is critical.
Monitor Vitals: Consistently log blood pressure, blood sugar, and oxygen levels. A sudden drop in standard cleanliness or an inability to manage these complex routines is a clear indicator that you may need to step in with professional home care support before an emergency occurs.
3. The Nutritional Recovery Blueprint
Post-surgical bodies require massive amounts of protein, clean hydration, and vitamins to repair deep tissue incisions. However, anesthesia and heavy pain medications frequently cause severe nausea, digestive issues, and an absolute loss of appetite in seniors.
Avoid Heavy Meals: Traditional, rich, oily dishes will aggravate gastric distress in a sedentary, recovering patient. Focus on light, small, and frequent portions instead.
Combat Chewing Fatigue: Often, weak post-op patients find chewing dense foods physically exhausting. Soft-textured, highly nutritious items are perfect for keeping their caloric intake steady without causing digestion issues.
Hydration Tracker: Ensure they consume enough water throughout the day to flush out residual surgical medications and prevent dehydration.

4. The First Post-Op Outing: Safe Medical Travel
Within 7 to 14 days of discharge, your parent will need to return to the hospital clinic for suture removal or a follow-up consultation with their surgeon. Transitioning an elderly, fragile patient from a bed back into a vehicle is a major physical hurdle.
Plan the Route: Avoid peak traffic hours to protect your parent from jerky, sudden braking in traffic, which can aggravate fresh surgical wounds.
Lightweight Equipment Only: If you are bringing along medical documents, extra clothes, or portable support items for the hospital visit, do not load them down with heavy, cumbersome bags. Jerky movements and heavy lifting can compromise fresh surgical lines or strain a senior's joints, so choose smooth, effortless transit solutions.
Moving Forward Responsibly
The secret to a smooth surgical recovery lies entirely in early preparation. By organizing the physical space, automating the meal schedules, and keeping a clinical eye on the warning signs of fatigue, you can fulfill your responsibilities perfectly without compromising your career milestones.
