In this AU Maila and Stiles are besties no more no less. The pack is having a friendly conversation over lunch. When Scott introduces his new beta.
Malia and the pack were sitting at a lunch table. The current conversation taking place around her was an argument from Stiles and Kira about which superhero was better. They were each fiercely trying to point out why the hero of their choice was better than the other’s. Stiles was arguing how Iron Man was better than Black Widow. While Kira recited out bullet lists about all the things that made Black Widow the better one. Malia wasn’t sure she could keep up with the argument, but she was going to trust Stiles and his judgement if they asked for her vote.
Malia caught a smell that reminded her of all the baby animals of the forest. Her eyes scoured the cafeteria until she found the source. Scott and a boy who smelled like puppy made their way towards the pack’s table. Malia’s gaze was relentless as she stared at the boy. He looked very nervous. Scott and the puppy hesitated when they noticed WW III was in the process of breaking out over super heroes.
“Scotty, tell Kira why Iron Man is better.” Stiles exclaimed as soon as he saw Scott. He was desperately looking for backup since Lydia had put in her two cents. She had sided with Kira.
“Hey guys this is Liam and he is my new beta.” Scott told the table as he ignored his best friend. And successfully brought peace (and evaded WW III) to the table as his smile poured sunshine into the tense atmosphere. Liam shyly raised his hand and waved at everyone in the table.
Malia caught his gaze and she observes as his eyes lit up. The air around them started to raise in temperature. Malia had her eyes on the boy. She turned her gaze toward Scott was he said a few words about making the boy feel welcome.Liam picked the empty seat next to her. Malia could feel his eyes on her and she turns to face him.
“Hi, my name is Malia.” Malia says to the boy. She was following her alpha’s orders afterall.
“You’re so pretty.” The words slip out of his mouth without his permission. “I… um well you are.” He tries to recover as he smiles his biggest smile.
“Thank you.” Malia responded as she leaned her head against her hand that rested on her cheek. “You’re quite the cutie yourself” she countered.
“Thank you.” His eyes sparkle and his tone is bashful.
“So how did did you become Scott’s beta?” The coyote bluntly asks.
Everyone at the table freezes and stares at Malia. And it dawns on the poor girl that this was one of those human moments she did not quite have a handle on. She starts to make herself smaller in her seat. She wishes she could make herself melt into a puddle. Or maybe now would be a good time to turn into a coyote.
“No it’s alright.” The boy reassures her and the table. He places his hand on her arm to stop her from her attempt disappearing into the cafeteria floor. That stops her from sinking further into her chair as she turns towards the boy. “It was gonna come out eventually anyway.”
The beta starts off the story and the whole table is raptured by the tale. His hand points to his scar free skin automatically as he gets the part where Scott saved his life. Malia felt her heart beat flutter like a hummingbird even though she knew he was alive. She could see him sitting right next to her. Scott said a few things whenever he felt it necessary. When he got the part where Scott kidnapped him and Stiles had aided and abetted. Stiles made a few modifications to the story while Malia slapped him in the thigh. Lydia looked like she felt as she herself felt. As she clutched onto the chair rails to prevent her violent urges at the boys ineptness. The table let out a few laughs in some parts in others the whole table roared with laughter. It caused everyone in cafeteria to turn their way.
Malia felt herself shifting her chair closer to the boy while he told his story. By the time she noticed their proximity it was too late. Liam turned in her direction and looked startled by how close she was to him. The change in the atmosphere took place as soon as their eyes meet. There was an undercurrent of tension that had not been present before. You could almost feel the electricity in the room. Malia had sensation that if she held out her hand to the air it would shock her.
The bell that signaled the end of lunch rang. It broke the moment and Liam took his hands to his ears as he covered them. He was still not accustomed to the enhanced senses that came with the bite. Maila flinched in surprise and let out a pout as time had interrupted the moment. Everyone started to gather their things and rise from the table.
Malia delivered her goodbyes and strutted her way out of the cafeteria. She waited patiently at the doors until she spotted the young boy. A smirk crept onto her face as she saw the boy make his way out of the cafeteria. She had found her mark. She walked in his direction with a purpose. She placed her fingers delicately around his wrist to catch his attention. Liam looked into her eyes with a questioning glance.
“Wanna find a closet?” The coyote made her intentions clear as she asked the puppy if he agreed. Liam simply nodded awestruck by her candor.
Malia dragged him toward the nearest closet. She didn’t like Algebra anyway.
