100 billion hours of Mobile Video but will it be Active or Passive? #mobileyouth #mynextbook
A lot of focus on the future of video but will it really look like the industry image of teens crowded round the mobile screen?
How can we understand video from its social context?
In the book All is Social I touched on Passive vs Active communication formats as key to understanding the future of technology. Adults tend to view technology as an Active tool:
* "hey look at what I'm doing"
* "look at what I just did"
Active is replete with images of dad calling daughter on iPhone. But in reality how will 90% of these 100 billion hours actually be used?
If we want to understand the future of tech understand its social context - 90% will be Passive. Teens like hanging out and video will be yet another tool to achieve this in a world of increasingly socially isolated teens dominated by helicopter parents.
Passive video communication - you can see it already on popular chat services like ooVoo and TinyChat. Teens use video not so much in the active format but as a passive phatic communication tool - their own personal CCTV service. Some hang out, some chat, some watch TV, some eat dinner.
To adults it appears meaningless but then the meaning occurs at the level of the Social Code not the observable. It's like grooming for monkeys - appears meaningless but fulfills a vital social function.
i wish you'd notice how much of this is for you.
