My favorite scenes in the LotR books are the ones where Legolas has vital information and just decides it's not important to share.

Like when Gandalf spent literal PAGES trying to figure out why the vibes were off in Moria and Legolas chimes in with just "it's a balrog :) that shit's evil :) we're so fucked :)" like what do you MEAN you knew already and just didn't tell him??

Re: the back scars

So I passed Izzy's scars by my resident consulting historian (*cough* my wife)

She suggests that the downward raking pattern, all in the same general direction, is strongly indicative of a cat o'nine tails - the nine-stranded whip used to impose discipline aboard British navy vessels of the time

That would make sense with what I’ve been reading regarding flogging/lashing as discipline on the seas in that era.

It was argued during Stede Bonnet’s trial by some witnesses that he was barely involved in his later piracy and was always a useless captain while other witnesses insisted he’d stepped more into the role and had been more disciplined and even ordered a lashing at one point—a mark of his power among the crew as pirates largely frowned on lashing, due to a great many of them having faced that kind of punishment in the navy. A Captain had to be respected for the crew to allow such a punishment.

The use of the cat-of-nine-tails specifically was used so much by the British Navy to maintain discipline that it became associated with them by other cultures they encountered (who were often deeply unsettled by the brutality displayed).

I also found an interesting article on desertion and floggings, which gives us details on the number of lashes one might be given for acts like desertion (12) and also how some captains got around those limits. And also a wiki article clarifying that the cat was used for severe, formal punishments while a rope’s end was used for more immediate and formal discipline maintenance.

Flogging wasn’t limited to the British Navy, though. England also flagellated vagrants and criminals, usually guilty of theft, for their crimes. In the early 16th century, this was done publicly, but by the late 1600s, the courts ordered these punishments be performed privately inside the prisons and houses of correction.

The Navy idea goes well with how Izzy behaves and also his infantry briquet saber (identified by @ferusaurelius), but the English criminal angle provides a solid foundation for an Izzy Hands who has always been in the criminal justice system and never knew any other life. I like both possibilities.

I want to pull this up again because I rewatched season 2 episode 5 where Izzy said he saw “an entire command gouge their eyes out on account of [a curse].” I could be wrong but that sounds distinctly if not exclusively naval.

And maybe Izzy means as a pirate he has raided a ship where he found that that’d happened, but I get the vibe he was there to witness it.

I’m endlessly fascinated by the new lore from David Jenkins and Con O’Neill that Izzy’s scars are from when he was younger and cocky and thought he knew better than the first mates on the ships where he served. That that’s why even though he carries a whip in season 2 and throws threats around, he never whips crew members.

I had personally been sure it was from a stint in the Navy (voluntary or involuntary) because historically the Navy was infamous for flogging to the point that it was a symbol recognized by other countries as being associated with the British Navy. (Previous post about this with reference links. I highly recommend reading the links about flogging and maritime punishment). I suppose that could still hold true, but now I’m thinking about the themes of Ed and Izzy both surviving and growing up in this toxic pirate environment, and I wonder if anyone Izzy served under was ex-navy.

I do like that this new information about Izzy not taking the whip to crew members is reinforced by the historical precedent that pirates hated flogging and it was rarely carried out by them, often because of their experiences pressed into the navy or serving on strict merchant and privateer ships. It’s one of the pieces of evidence used against the real Stede Bonnet when he insisted he wasn’t responsible for his crew’s piracy after being arrested—during his second pirating stint, he ordered a flogging which would only have been carried out if he held a lot of authority and respect with his crew (that reference is in my previous link too).

I like Con’s idea to give Izzy a rising sun tattoo, but I think the scars served his character development far better, even if we don’t get to see much of them in the show outside of the behind-the-scenes photos. Far more intriguing.
