“Abuela’s Kitchen” – A Puerto Rican Food Story
Every Sunday, the smell of garlic, plantains, and roasted pork filled the air in Isabela, a small town on the coast of Puerto Rico.
In a cozy kitchen painted yellow like the sun, little Sofía watched her abuela, hands moving quickly but with love.
“Today, we make mofongo,” said Abuela, holding a wooden pilón. “You smash the green plantains with garlic, oil, and a little bit of magic.”
Sofía giggled. “Magic?”
“Sí,” said Abuela. “The kind that tastes like home.”
As they cooked, her cousins arrived, bringing trays of arroz con gandules and a golden lechón with crispy skin.
Then came pastelón — layers of sweet plantain, meat, and cheese — “like lasagna,” Sofía said, “but better.”
For dessert, they poured coquito into tiny cups. “But just a sip,” said Abuela, winking. “You’re still little.”
They ate together under the mango tree, laughing and passing plates, music playing in the background.
Sofía looked around, her belly full and heart warmer than ever.
“Abuela, will I cook like you someday?”
Abuela smiled.
“Mija, if you cook with love, you already do.”
And from that day on, Sofía didn’t just taste food — She tasted memories.
