It was juvenile, is what it was. You were literally juniors in college, and you were at a party at your friend’s apartment where some of the boys had decided to play spin the bottle.
Katherine had decided to throw a small party at her apartment to celebrate her promotion at her internship with the paper. She had invited your entire group of friends–Jack, Crutchie, Davey, Race, Albert, Jojo, even Spot–and then some. All in all, there were about 25 people in the apartment, all between the ages of 20 and 22.
And someone had suggested spin the bottle.
“You guys do realize we’re not juniors in high school anymore, right?” You asked as the boys made fun of Spot and Race for a pretty heavy kiss.
“What, are you afraid, (Y/N)?” Race taunted, pulling away from Spot.
“Yeah, right,” you snorted, huffing out a laugh. “I just think it’s stupid. Everyone can see the tension between everyone else, why do you need some dumb game to kiss them?”
“Funny you’d be saying that, (Y/N),” Katherine said, coming up beside you. “Considering you won’t–”
Katherine’s sentence was cut off as you sent her a steely glare. All of the boys noticed the interaction and looked at the two of you, slightly confused, but thankfully didn’t say anything.
“If it’s so stupid, how about you give it a try?” Race challenged.
“Fine,” you said, staring him down. You crouched down between Jack and Jojo and gavet the bottle a rough spin, watching it circle around the room. When it finally stopped, you looked up at the person it was pointing to.
Your heart started to race. This was who Katherine was going to mention. You had been crushing on Albert since freshman year, and she knew it.
This was going to be rough.
Albert hopped up from his spot in the circle and moved towards you, pulling you flush against him. He looked down at you and said “Are you sure?”
It was now or never. If you didn’t do this then, you would probably never get another chance to kiss Albert. Even if it was for a stupid game, you decided to take it.
You nodded, and Albert leaned down to capture his lips with your own.
It was like heaven. His lips were soft and warm and you were losing yourself in them. Suddenly you feel his teeth nip your bottom lip, and you gasped. He took advantage of the gasp to slip his tongue into your mouth.
This was when people started complaining. Race threw an empty soda can at Albert’s back, yelling “Come on, get a room!”
Albert pulled away, turning to look between Race and Spot. “Like you should be talking.”
Race shut up as Albert sat back down, then turned to look at you, still standing, shocked, just outside of the circle.
“Everything okay, (Y/N)?” Race asked, shooting you a smirk.
“Just fine, Race,” you said, throwing him a fake smile. “I told you it was just a stupid game.”
You saw an unreadable expression flash onto Albert’s face as you turned and walked away, your heart still pounding. You knew that if you stayed there any longer you wouldn’t be able to hold it together, so as soon as you were out of sight of the living room you practically sprinted down the hall.
You threw yourself into the bathroom, shutting and locking the door behind you. You slid down the wall, taking deep breaths and trying to calm your racing heart.
You had done it. You had just kissed your crush of three years. And it was…great.
But he didn’t think so. He couldn’t. He was just playing the stupid game. They all were.
What felt like hours later, but in reality was only about 15 minutes, you heard a knock on the door. You took a shaky breath, feeling your heart rate pick back up just the littlest bit.
“What?” You asked. Straight and to the point. Hoping the person outside the door couldn’t hear the shake in your voice.
“(Y/N)?” Came Albert’s voice. “You in there?”
You let out a sigh, closing your eyes. This was one of the last people you wanted to see right now.
When he didn’t hear a reply, he knocked lightly on the door again. “Come on, (Y/N), I know you’re in there. Is everything alright?”
“Fine,” you replied shortly.
You heard Albert sigh and jiggle the doorknob. “Come on, just let me in.”
“Come on, (Y/N), we really need to talk.”
With that, you stood up and threw the door open, ready to give him an earful, but when you saw him standing there, hair tousled and worry in his eyes, you broke.
He stepped into the bathroom, closing the door behind the two of you and leaning back against it, keeping his distance.
“Are you sure you’re alright?” He asked softly.
“I told you, I’m fine,” you snapped, turning away and closing your eyes.
“I knew I shouldn’t have done that,” Albert said, flopping his head back against the door. “You were right, it was stupid. And I’m sorry.”
You stayed turned around, not able to look at him without betraying your emotions.
“I knew someone like you would never like someone like me,” he said quietly, mostly to himself.
Your eyes snapped open and you spun around. “You–you like me?”
“Yes!” he cried. “I’ve been all but in love with you since freshman year! But you just don’t seem to pick up on the hints!”
“That was real,” he said, stepping towards you. “All real. I know I probably took it a little too far, but I’ve been waiting to kiss you for years. Listen, (Y/N), I’m sorry, I know you probably hate me but please just–”
Albert’s words were cut off as you grabbed his cheeks and pulled his lips to yours in another feverish kiss. His eyes fell closed and his hands hovered over your waist, wary of touching you.
You pulled away, looking him in the eyes, and said one simple thing. “I thought I was the only one falling.”
With that, Albert pulled you tight to him once again and pressed his lips against yours. The kiss was heated, and rough, and wonderful.
After a while, the two of you calmed down. The kisses became more and more soft and full of love. Finally, Albert pulled his mouth away from yours and rested your foreheads together, eyes still closed.
“I’m sorry it took me so long to say anything,” he mumbled. “I’m sorry it was under the pretense of a stupid game. I’m sorry.”
You pressed a soft kiss to the corner of his mouth and smiled, brushing your thumb across his cheek. “It’s alright,” you told him. “I just–I’m glad something finally happened. My whining was getting absurd.” Here, you chuckled, pulling back farther to look him in the eyes. “I’m pretty sure Katherine would have killed me if I went one more day pining over you and not doing anything about it.”
Albert’s face broke out into a grin, and it was beautiful. “You’re adorable, you know that?” he asked.
You blushed, looking down at your feet. “You are too,” you responded, still slightly shy, even after making out for a solid five minutes.
“Hey, uh, (Y/N)?” Albert asked, suddenly sounding nervous. “Do you, uh, do you want to be my girlfriend?”
You smiled and kissed him once more, keeping yourself as close to him as possible.
His arms tightened around your waist at your response, and all the two of you could do was stand there in Katherine’s bathroom, smiling at each other.
