This is Natasha Khan’s second album, and whereas not as striking as her first, that’s only a reflection on how fully-realised her debut was; this contains a similar quality, variety and intensity of her artistic expression. Like many female artists who do not perform conventional pop songs and have the audacity to compose their own works and play instruments, they have the tendency (by mainly male music critics) to be compared to Kate Bush. (See also: Tori Amos, Florence Welch, Fiona Apple and any other slightly alternative female artist). Bat For Lashes is no exception. She goes full Bush here by creating what is essentially a concept album, a tale of two halves based on her alter-ego Pearl, born from her sojourn in the California desert. The album cover is more Frida Kahlo than Kate Bush however, and evokes the mystical, metaphysical and spiritual content within. Glass is a lovely opener and makes good use of the tribal-style drumming that features in another highlight Two Planets. Sleep Alone and Peace of Mind are other standout tracks, as is the last one, a rather unusual ditty made more so with the sonorous tones of Scott Walker. Daniel was the main hit single from the album and is another delicious melody, far and away superior to Elton John’s song of the same name. Khan should be more of a household name than she is. She’s not, but I think she probably likes it that way. She’s going to continue to plough her own path to the stars. #batforlashes @batforlashes #twosuns #pearlsdream #twoplanets #twosuns #nowplaying #nowlistening #recordcollection #randomrecordreview https://www.instagram.com/p/CHyXDeTJgJa/?igshid=16etn85znb2ww
