He ran his eyes down Alfred’s frame with heavy eyes, and nearly flinched back when the man turned suddenly and went very still. “Mr. Jordan, what are you doing?” “Doing?” Hal asked, “Being myself, I guess. Talking to you.” He pulled off the glasses, which had slowly been sliding down his nose, and brought his hand to the bridge of it. Then he glanced up, and met Hal’s eyes with a determined gaze. He seemed to think to himself, moving his eyes down from his eyes and running over Hal as he leaned back into the chair. Then he suddenly stood up, quick enough for Hal to reel back once again. “Mr. Jordan, I am far too old to play games. Either speak now or forever hold your piece.” or, hal jordan makes a joke, make a bet, and gets in way over his head.
