Hazbin Hotel: “The Roots of Evil”

Looking at the concept art for Pentagram City compared to the show proper, it looks like it stayed pretty consistent.
Looking at how it appears in Stayed Gone, we can see that Vee Tower, the Hazbin Hotel, Rosie's Emporium, and the Heaven Embassy are all in the same places as they were in the concept art. It would be pretty safe to assume, therefore, that Uptown, Downtown, the Entertainment District, and Cannibal Town are all the same, too.
While there isn't anything concrete here to place the Industrial or Doomsday Districts, we do also get a rough Pentagram City map in Finale:
We can tell that this is also pentagram city because of the point connected to the Vees, Alastor, and Rosie (I'm pretty sure that's her arm at the bottom) all align with the already established placements of Vee Tower, the Hotel, and Rosie's Emporium. (The camera pans up right after this so we can see that the other two lines connected to the same point as Alastor connect to Charlie and Lucifer, which makes that point the Hotel).
Because of that, we know that the Industrial District stayed the same, with the point connected to Carmilla's photo matching its placement in the concept art. Interestingly, there isn't a line connecting Rosie's photo to her point, nor does Zestial get connected to a point, though he is clearly being lumped in with Carmilla. I also find it fascinating that Zeezi's photo is here, as I wouldn't have assumed that she's a particularly important Overlord; her domain seems to be pretty niche. I think it's also fair to assume that the Doomsday district is exactly where it was in the concept art, as well.
The reason I went down this rabbit hole at all was because I was curious to see if I could figure out where Magic Kat was in Pentagram City, or at least a reasonable guess.
Based on the purples and blues on the buildings around it, and the specifics of the signs, I think I'd place it somewhere in the Entertainment District. It would be fitting for a casino, though I think it'd be tucked off in a corner somewhere, as far from the Vees as Husk could manage (we know he doesn't think very highly of them, and by the time he became an Overlord, Vox would've already been in power for a couple decades, and Val might have already been established as well).
And THEN I decided to try to place the other Overlords that we know of. Here's my headcanons:
Overlords gain power from souls rather than territory, though it seems like most of them have a sort of seat of power (Vee Tower, Rosie's Emporium, Magic Kat, etc.).
Husk I've already explained, Zeezi feels like the perfect halfway point between Entertainment and Industrial (Klub Kaiju is a club/rave, after all), so I put her in the border territory between the two. We see Prick and Hatchet's turf war in the Doomsday District in s1e3, and I'm pretty sure the backdrop for their section of Bad With Us is the same. I also like to think that Cherri and Pentious' turf wars were happening in the same area.
Maestro and Niffty's placements are mostly just based on vibes. Maestro's theatre would certainly qualify as Entertainment, but I think he'd prefer to be near the relative quiet and calm of Uptown. For Niffty, I just think it'd be neat for her to be near to Rosie, and that side of the map was looking a bit empty.
Into the Hellaverse 1: The Pride Ring
Hey all!
As I'm sure anyone who follows me knows, I have a lore guide on AO3- titled Did YOU Know This Hellaverse Lore?- detailing various worldbuilding details I've noticed in Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel. However! I have decided to share some of what I've learned about the each Ring of Hell here on Tumblr, so I can add picture references. (I technically can do that as well on AO3, it's just easier here.) Some posts will have more than others, and I won't cover everything I've found (if you want to see that, see my lore guide) but I hope everyone finds this informative!
Let's get started!
The Pride Ring is the topmost ring of Hell, and is ruled by Lucifer Morningstar, King Sin of Pride and King of Hell, and his Queen, Lilith Morningstar.
Hazbin Hotel takes place largely in Pentagram City, also known as The Pentagram. Pentagram City is described as the very seedy combination of New York City and Las Vegas.
(Given Pentagram City is surrounded on all sides by jagged rocks and the city appears sunken into the ground, I believe it resides inside a crater. And since that crater is directly below Heaven, I believe it is the crater Lucifer and Lilith made when they were cast down into Hell and hit the ground. They later used that empty space to build the city in.)
Pentagram City is divided into various areas, but there are six major Districts of note:
The Entertainment District (ruled by the Vees)
The Industrial District (ruled by Carmilla Carmine)
The Doomsday District (home to Prick and Hatchet)
Cannibal Town (ruled by Rosie)
Uptown (home to the Hazbin Hotel)
Downtown (home to the Heaven Embassy)
However, while Pentagram City is the largest city in the Pride Ring, it's not the only city. Helluva Boss takes place in Imp City, being located in Pride's "Second Circle." This leads me to believe the Pride Ring has "Nine Circles" that contain cities (going off a comment by Katie Killjoy in the pilot).
Imp City was founded in 1981 (however, this was in the pilot so it may no longer be canon). Imp City also has designated Exorcist Free Zones.
Hell's Courthouse is located in the Pride Ring, and- according to some merch- the Ring also has location called The Royal Circle, though it is unknown what that is exactly. (I theorize it is where you can find the homes of the demon royalty of Pride, such as the Morningstar Palace, or homes of the Ars Goetia.)
The Pride Ring has vast cities, but the landscape outside them is a barren wasteland with jagged mountains and cliffs of red and maroon rock- though there are flat areas that have the occasional tiny patch of dark grass.
But there are also some areas, such as where Martha lives, that have forests made up of scraggly, leafless trees with black bark and red eyes along the trunks, and grey bushes that also have red eyes. (Whether these plants normally have eyes or the eyes are a result of the Exterminations is unknown.)
As you can see in all of the above pictures, the Pride Ring does appear to have a day/night cycle despite not having a sun (none of the rings seem to- the song “Easy” even notes that Hell does not receive sunlight, and Sam Miller had to remind Vivziepop at one point the Wrath Ring has no sun). The sky is red during the “day” and darkens to reddish-purple at “night,” with red and white stars.
There is a giant glowing image of a pentagram floating in the sky above Pentagram City but doesn’t seem to be visible anywhere else in the Pride Ring. There is also a dark, stationary moon with another pentagram on it that is always visible in the sky. And, of course, Heaven is also always visible in Pride’s sky.
Pride also doesn’t have any large bodies of water, and Valentino at one point confirms in a text to Angel Dust that Pride has no islands.
Pride experiences both acid rain and "scream rain."
Acid rain is implied to be literal acid rain given Zestial notes he likes the sound of screams when it happens.
Scream rain appears to be like normal rain, but whenever there's lightning it creates the sound of screams. (I theorize scream rain is another result of Exterminations. Many characters seem surprised by scream rain, even noting rain has no business screaming. I think scream rain only started 7-8 years ago due to the essences of dead Sinners interacting with Hell's weather. So when the lightning screams, it's literally the exterminated Sinners' screams being heard.)
Many objects, walls, and other surfaces throughout Pride have red eyes on them. These eyes belong to Sinners who have died in the Exterminations. When killed with angelic steel, a Sinner's dark essence merges with nearby objects and infrastructure, creating the eyes. They are forever doomed to become part of Hell itself, never to again regenerate.
In flashbacks to before the Exterminations, we see that the eyes are distinctly missing from the landscape. In Helluva Boss we even see that the eyes have spread to other rings, such as the Lust Ring.
Sinners are confined to the Pride Ring and cannot traverse to the other six rings. If they try to, a barrier prevents them from leaving.
Hellborn demons, however, can travel between rings through a Hell Elevator (that I'm affectionately calling the Hellevator), which are enormous elevators that go up and down between rings. They can be accessed through (what I’m calling) Hellevator Stations.
There seem to be different kinds of elevator cars. Some are large, spacious, and luxurious with ample seating, while others are small and cramped with vertical poles and limited seating like subway cars. (The former is likely more expensive, while the latter is the common, affordable option.)
Given the use of apples, eyes, and white and gold in the vaguely angelic decor of the Imp City station, station concourse, luxury Hellevator, and waiting areas, I believe Lucifer designed and built the entire Hellevator system/stations.
However, the Hellevator isn’t the only way between rings. There is also a locomotive train system and a bus system that can travel between rings.
It is also possible to find natural passages between rings, such as the caverns and mine shafts connecting the Wrath and Pride Rings.

A few important thoughts I had at 4am, in order, and hastily wrote down (translated when I properly woke up into actual comprehendible language):
The nature of the Hazbin Hotel as “free housing and safety But With Conditions” is actually super interesting from the perspective of sinners as a marginalized group (think AA, shelters with strict rules against personal items, etc.) and despite Charlie being well-meaning I hope they explore that kind of nuanced fact about it more.
An avenue that they probably won’t explore in canon but it would be so cool if someone did in fic (or I might. Who knows.) is if Angel’s soul is released from its contract without his consent (through, I dunno, Lucifer was my first thought but also maybe killing Val, or Husk winning his soul back like people talk about). I think the idea that Angel would be upset about it just from the boundary cross alone, not to mention if he actually misses the security or if it’s protecting him from something/someone worse, would be Super fucking neat.
Do Overlords lose all their souls when they die? People have proposed ultrakilling Val as a way to release Angel but what if even a temporary hell death makes an Overlord lose their owned souls? That would make the overlord fights even more meaningful, if they then have to start from scratch.
Speaking of, I assumed only Overlords could own souls— when do you gain that power? How do you find it out? What are the hell logistics of this? Are there soul brokers? Is someone keeping track of all this?
How do Any building materials, foods, etc. get brought to hell? If it’s by heaven logic (where like all the nice and fun things go to heaven too) wouldn’t all the foods, electronics etc. in hell be really shitty, at least before people amped them up? What about like. Concrete? How are hell buildings made? Do they just spawn in?
Hell overpopulation is bullshit, I still stand by this, I think the angels were lying out their asses. Just make the city bigger? Is there only one city in Pride? Does every single sinner live in Pentagram City? Why can’t Lucifer just… make it bigger? And if Pentagram City holds every single sinner, why the fuck does it look so small? Like you can see Alastor’s radio tower from the zoom out, right? That’s bullshit. It should be like a hundred times bigger than Tokyo. And where is LuLuWorld? You’d think you could see it from the zoom out shots, if the city’s that small. There’s no room for it. Can we get an episode of the Hazbin crew going to Lu Lu World? Is it just for imps? Does Lucifer like imps more than sinners? Maybe he should make fewer fucking imps then, if overpopulation is such a problem.
Wait no how many sinners per square mile are in this city? How many fucking sinners did Vox kill with the laser? The threat “you could destroy half the Pentagram” becomes so much crazier if literally every sinner ever lives here. It’s entirely plausible that his impulsive laser swinging killed more people than an extermination would’ve. Holy shit. That would be actually nuts, if someone were to find that out.
