Modern Day Sophie

Sophie’s parents weren’t married. Her mum died when she was 3, her dad did care for her but wasn’t an affectionate man. He ensured she was well school, but at 11 everything changed when her dad married.

Shipped off to boarding school, Sophie became more interested in books, she loves to read, and it is her escape from reality. When she was sent home during the summer holidays she would disappear into books, long novels and plays anything that distracted her. She is really good at general knowledge because of it. (She does the crossword in any of the papers that get left behind and always manages to complete them)

When she turns 13, she starts helping her dad out at Penwood Designs, running around making coffee, tea, fetching things for the models and the designers and she falls in love with fashion and creating things.

She had her first kiss at 15 when some boy was paid to so by Rosamund. Sophie hated it, she deliberately bit the boys’ lip. She’s never kissed anyone since.

When her dad dies, she’s forced to give up her place at University to work. Araminta saying she has to “earn her keep” but allows her to attend Open University if she pays for it herself, out of her measly wages, Sophie applies for as many grants as she can and manages to make it work.

She is constantly tired, she works 12/13 hours a day for Penwood and then does her classes on an evening. She gets her assignments in on time and is never late.

Sophie is always on time for everything. The girl practically runs on coffee.

The staff worry about her burning out, but they are so afraid of Araminta they do not do much to intervene. Even when they saw her holding her ribs and wincing for a few weeks every time she moved. It was pretty common knowledge but no one did anything.

Sophie is highly intuitive and is able to read people, she can meet someone once and just seems to know about the person. She has quite a hard exterior, she keeps herself to herself but she’s always got a warm smile, but she doesn’t really let people in so despite the smile, people think she’s closed off, this is truer when she is around her step family, but she has such a kind heart, she will always give her change to the homeless as she walks past. If she’s outside having her lunch, she will share it with someone who is homeless or starving, even if its her only meal that day.

She worked really hard, she got all A*s in her GCSEs and her A Levels, were all A’s. She loves languages and learned to speak French really well. She speaks to Genevieve one of the designers in French to keep her skills up.

Sophie doesn’t own a TV, and her limited time, she’s not seen many movies. She had managed to watch Pride and Prejudice when she was at Boarding school and its her favourite thing ever.

She’s really petite, at 5”4 most of the cast offs don’t fit her and she was determined not to be swamped in the clothing, so she learnt how to make her own amendments.

Sophie doesn’t really think she’s anything special to look at, she likes the emerald green of her eyes but that’s it, however, she often gets catcalled on the street cause of her size, her chest appears to be a lot bigger than it actually is. She’s a size 10 at the most with 34D chest which looks a lot bigger given her small stature. She gets felt up on the tube regularly, it’s never anything usually more than a squeeze of her backside, or “accidental” brush against her breasts but she took kickboxing at Boarding school as one of her PE electives and normal boxing, she felt it would be better to toughen her up so she wouldn’t bruise as much (she was wrong) but it just made her feel better. She can throw a hell of a punch, but she’s never really had the courage to actually do it. She’s just so used to it now, she hates it but it’s never long enough to do anything to stop it. If it’s not too late, she will just walk instead.

Sophie can knit and sew, she’s had a limited wardrobe from the age of 18 so she tended to repair her own clothes, or the cast offs she would make her own clothes with.

Sophie has a pair of Converse that she’s had since she was 17, it was the one thing Araminta wouldn’t take off her, as she knew neither of her daughters would be caught dead in those sort of shoes. The sole is glued on, they are practically falling off her feet, but she refuses to part with them.

Sophie is a great cook, she loves making meals from scratch, when her dad died, Araminta forced Sophie to cook for the family on top of her other duties at work. She’d not get much of the food herself but enough to keep her going. She makes a mean Apple Crumble. It was her grandmother’s recipe. She has a few of her mother’s and grandmother’s cookbooks stuffed away in her room. They are dogeared but they are her prized possessions.

she has a polar bear cuddly toy which her mother gave her, which she called Chilly. It’s been her comfort and friend since she was a baby. When she was at school, she would often talk to it about her day. She wasn’t a popular girl so didn’t have “friends” people spoke to her and weren’t really rude but that was about it. She would have her meals by herself and keep to herself.

Sophie passed her driving test first time but since then she’s never been in a car. Her dad died two weeks later, he’d ordered her a car, but she never got it. She always wanted a little car like a Nissan Micra, but she knows that is a pipe dream.

She loves the country. Her boarding school was in the country and it was freeing, she loved walking around the fields, staring out over the endless green, wishing for a different life, wishing her mother was still alive or that her father loved her enough to stand up to her wicked step mother. She loved long hikes through the country on her weekends, usually rambling alone with her books in her bag and her Ipod for company.

Sophie tends to wear long sleeves, and layers, it makes it harder to bruise. She’s pretty sure at 19 her ribs had been broken but she’d just curled up in a ball and cried wishing she was dead and wondering what she’d done to deserve this existence. She got up the next morning and carried on, but it was agony.

Sophie’s a technophobe, she’s got no idea how to use Social Media or her phone. Posy gave her, her old phone but its still mostly got Posy’s details on but its still something she can use. She can only just use her iPod but updating it is out of the question

Sophie can sing. She doesn’t often but she can sing and likes singing to herself. Her dad had some old records an gave her an I-pod for her birthday before Araminta, which she keeps hidden… and has loads of songs on. She keeps this with her at all times. It is so old now that Araminta wouldn’t take it off her, it’s not worth it.

She loves all sorts of music but U2, Fleetwood Mac, Green day and Foo Fighters are some of her favourite, but she loves music from the 60s and 70s as well. She is aware of how random her music tastes are, but she doesn’t care. She loves to dance as well, when she was little, she used to twirl around her room, and wished she was ballet dancer.

Though she spends her time in her converse, she loves heels. When she was left alone in the house, she would walk around in Araminta’s heels. She would often model the clothes for the designers to help them as well, walking in heels that should kill most women. Sophie loves wearing them, they make her feel powerful and strong.

Sophie loves flicking through fashion magazines, though usually just when they’ve been left around. Genevieve would often bring an extra one and drop it in Sophie’s bag for her. Gen was the one who helped Sophie get her grants for Open Uni. She’s probably the closest thing to a friend Sophie has, even if she is 5 years older that Sophie but as Gen was just an intern at the time of the Rib incident Gen didn’t do much but give Sophie painkillers to help and encouraged the others not to give her so much work to recover.

She’s never really had a chance to drink, she doesn’t have the time. Other than the one kiss, she’s never dated.

Despite her downtrodden upbringing, she’s an optimist, she believes something, at some point has to give and her life has to get better. The employees at Penwood all like her well enough. She’s always smiling and works with a smile, even if she’s not on the inside. She’s mastered (or so she thinks) at hiding her true feelings away, even if there is sadness in her eyes, that no one else has noted.

She is a hopeless romantic, she loves romance novels and longs for it herself. She doesn’t really let people in, she’s so used to be unlovable, and unwanted… but she desperately wants people to get close, desperately wants a family that loves her… but she’s pretty much resigned herself to the fact she doesn’t deserve any of it. and that fine… (really...)
