Widely regarded as one of the greatest tabla players of all time, he was known for bringing Indian classical music to a global audience. He was the eldest son of the renowned tabla player Alla Rakha, and won four Grammy Awards.

Ustad Zakir Hussain died of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Tabla maestro, four-time Grammy award winner and Padma Vibushan awardee Ustad Zakir Hussaindied in San Francisco, aged 73, on December 15, 2024, leaving a void in the world of classical music. Ustad Hussain’s family, in a statement, said he died of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

What is idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis? Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a disease that causes scarring of the lungs. This scarring causes breathing to become progressively difficult. Pulmonary fibrosis is an interstitial lung disease. Interstitial lung diseases are a group of conditions characterised by inflammation or scarring or both that damage the lungs.

‘Idiopathic’ means that it has no known cause. IPF is the most common form of pulmonary fibrosis and is a serious, chronic condition.
