Persian Love Cake - Gluten Free
Happy Sunday! Checked another to do off the baking list with these Persian love cake donuts ❤️ According to legend, a Persian woman was madly in love with a prince. So, for him to succumb to her charms and fall in love with her, she decided to bewitch him by concocting a love potion in the form of a magic cake. Sounds like a plan! 😂 made #doughnuts instead of cake and Made with rose water, cardamom, pistachio, and lemon. It’s pretty simple and very flavorful just don’t go overboard with the 🌹! This recipe is from @twiggstudios (one of my favs pics are so pretty). #persianlovecake #donuts #pistachio #rose #persialovecakes #persianlovedoughnuts #prettyfood #lovepotion #sundayfunday #sundayvibes https://www.instagram.com/p/Cdk6K1TO8uU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Today, I had an hour-long conversation (in both Farsi and English) with my mom via FaceTime. It was such a nice experience and I look forward to being able to talk to her fully in Farsi as I become more fluent.
Last week, my mom went to my uncle’s house to celebrate his 65th birthday, and she baked a Persian Love cake for the occasion. I asked her who was there, and she mentioned my cousin Saba. Interestingly, there are tons of names for cousins in Farsi, depending on whose side of the family they come from. So, since Saba is my mom’s brother’s daughter, (دختر برادر مادرم), she would be called “dokhtar dâyi دختر دایی.” I always enjoy learning these tidbits from my mom because it feels more authentic than just reading it in a textbook.
We also discussed how she moved from Tehran in 1978, when she was 9 years old. Her house in Tehran was a big beautiful three-story building with two swimming pools and a terrarium. My grandpa (بابا بزرگ) built it himself. Even though her transition to the US was more than 40 years ago, the memory is still very tender. This is a realization that I have had over and over again whenever I ask my mom about Iran. Some people may have the preconception that immigration leads to a happier life, and so you forget the past. In reality, each time you remember, it’s as if it was yesterday.
A general cultural takeaway I have from my گفتگو with my mom is that phrases are much more emotion-filled and dramatic in Farsi than in English. For example, qorbunet beram قربونت برم, “I would die for you” is basically said to mean “I love you.” This is commonly used in Farsi, but would sound rather strange in English.
In the video attached here, you can hear my mom talk about her limited knowledge of Farsi, since she only received a 2nd grade education in Iran. Also, enjoy the view of my two dogs. Thank you for reading!
