Do you have any opinions or anything in your personal history that could actually get you cancelled?
Yes, definitely– one or more current opinions
Yes, definitely– something in my past (even if it's no longer relevant)

No, I don't think so

Milestone birthday! Fifty seems like an absurd age to be. Over the past few months, I wrote down a lot of ideas I'd most like to share with people, and then I made each into a panel for a comic book. Eventually the things coalesced into 4 categories: personal history, big philosophical idea, advice I'd offer, and then quotes or lyrics I find really meaningful or useful.
Are not there little chapters in everybody's life, that seem to be nothing, and yet affect all the rest of their history?
William Makepeace Thackeray, Vanity Fair
hi!! something I'm a little curious about. are the songs at the beginning of each chapter and the 70's genre you assigned the main band your own preferences when it comes to music? do you have much experience writing/playing music? as someone who knows very little about music history the care taken with the writing where it's important is soo interesting.
Hey there! But personal but I appreciate the inquiry, I love talking about music
Yes, they are indeed my own preferences. I like modern music, too, and quite a lot of it, but there's something about 70s/80s music that just hits different. Plus, I enjoy the lore more. Hot take but modern celebrities are simply less interesting. I also read a lot about music and related themes, some of my most recent reads are From Here To The Great Beyond, Making Rumors, NPR's How Women Made Music... It's sorta kinda a little bit my greatest passion.
I've written songs all my life, but never shared them aside from here in this IF. I play the guitar and the blues harp, neither of them very well. I used to take lessons in the guitar at least though. I also sing a lot and I've been told I sound good, but I only do that for myself (or when I'm super drunk). Fun fact; I had an "appointment" to audition for a band where I study, but I didn't show up. I chickened out. I figured since a lot of people would show up, I most likely wouldn't be picked, as I don't have any actual professional schooling or experience, and then that rejection would drain the joy of singing in itself later on. I think it was the best call.
Fun fact! 3/4 of my Russian grandparents were almost declared enemies of the people
One grandfather went to war against the Finns during ww1 as an 18-17-year-old boy. They captured him, gave him some medical care (cut off his frost-bitten toes), and let him go back home.
He kept it a secret until his deathbed because Russia tended not to treat ex-Pows very well. They were viewed with HIGH suspicion. So he might not have been sent to a camp, but it's likely he would have been, and he definitely should have faced interrogations and predjudice
My great-grandmother just existed as a Jewish girl. At around 19ish, she was part of a small amount of people that got picked by the state to attend a nice summer camp. Well, someone got really jealous and essentially said. “Why did SHE get to go to the fun place and not me? She must secretly be in league with “the jews” and they helped her get in!”
No one defended my great-grandmother, not even her boyfriend at the time, my great-grandfather, except for her best friend. I don’t know the exact words that were said, but from the information I’ve gathered, it went something like this:
“What the fuck is wrong with you, assholes. Why are you complaining about an orphan having something nice? Oh, so she went to summer camp? Where did you go during the summer? To your home? The home that you have? To your loving parents--who are ALIVE? Fuck you.” And the charges were dropped.
My other great-grandfather was sent to make planes during ww2. He wrote to the government SO MANY times asking to be put on the front lines, that they wrote back telling him if he sent ONE more letter, they would declare him an enemy of the people, and sent him to a labor camp
