[continued] successful law students and actually find it really interesting having read 'letters to a law student' and 'what about law'. Should I mention that both my parents are lawyers or will this look as though I am simply following their profession in the hopes of joining "daddy's business" (which is NOT the case). Does it show that I know just how hard the profession can be? Should I mention that I used to be against but having done my own research have changed views?

definitely mention it, but in the way you said it to me. “I never wanted to be a lawyer, both my parents are, etc [not too personal but a bit]” and then what experiences convinced you that your initial impression was wrong. that’s a really interesting/different ps compared to most people, I think it’ll give you a unique perspective. Just be sure to strike the right balance between self depreciating and fun.

(Literature kid, again) Ah, thank you! The main reason why I can´t get through it is because I feel like I do not understand it. It is filled with difficult words, and hard wordings, and I feel like a kid reading a book for well-educated adults. I understand the concepts, but reading page up and down about how synapses works and what triggers them, I just does not stick. If i mention them in my PS, do the interviewers expect me to know every detail?

They’ll expect you to be able to answer fairly detailed questions about it, yeah. I mean, they won’t be like “define X” but they’ll expect you to know enough to discuss it, yeah. I would take a few notes to review before interview. They might not ask you about it but still, better safe than sorry.

Firstly, congratulations on the first! Secondly, I'm about to start drafting and then writing my personal statement. I'm hoping to apply for physical natural sciences. Do you have any tips for what to put in/not to put in? Any advice would be appreciated!

So as I’m sure you know, personal statement really don’t matter, especially for sciences. The easiest way to write a good personal statement is to have things to write about, so experiences with your degree. For you that might be working in a lab or physics club or whatever. Cam expects you to say “I love science, science science science” but if you can say “I love science, look at all this science stuff I’ve done, I am so into the science” that’s better.

Mentioning outside reading is good but don’t turn it into a bibliography. So “My passion for physics was sparked by Hawkings’ A Brief History of Time and I have since supplemented with other readings in that area” is better than “I read A Brief History of Time by Hawking and ______ by ____ and _______ by ___ (etc).”

So overall: don’t stress about it too much, as long as your PS is adequate, they won’t really care. If you do have a special area of physics that you’ve read a lot about and are totally obsessed with, that’s great to mention and discuss a bit, just know they’ll almost certainly ask you about it in interview so don’t fake it! So I'm thinking of applying for hsps in september and i just wondered how applying works? As no other unis do this course, id probs be applying for anthropology to all my other choices, & would tailor my personal statement to this. Would cam interview me specifically on my chosen area of the hsps tripos or would they require me to know about all the branches of the tripos- so more beyond anthropogly? Also could i write in the SAQ that I'm interested in more in the HSPS course than anthropolgy?

They’ll interview you broadly but won’t expect you to know specifics about areas that you haven’t indicated an interest in (so you won’t get like intense questions about archaeology is you want politics). But generally their questions will be broad and revolve around the role of politics and culture in our world today. Reading the news is probably the best preparation for HSPS interviews and making sure that you’re reading it critically (so multiple sources, thinking especially about how culture could be impacting current situations). Just generally being internationally aware and culturally sensitive is what you need to demonstrate. Other than that, the typical Cam need for creative but well grounded/defendable thinking is what they look for. Be prepared for curve balls in HSPS, they really want you to be able to look at the world with a critical eye.

Also in your SAQ you should write an extra personal statement for HSPS, specifically mentioning why it’s really what you want (so if you want anth, maybe mentioning “oh but I’d like to take politics courses too because I think the two are really interrelated and you can gain more studying them together than apart” that kind of thing, a recognition of the value of studying these subjects as interrelated entities, is what they’re looking for).
