A very delicious scenario that I'm currently obsessed with:
Caretaker (lover/family member/life-long bestfriend) and whumpee are running together while the caretaker keeps zigzagging, crouching, and covering whumpee's body from falling debris/broken ceilings/whumper(s)' attacks and so on. When close to the exit/safe zone, the (injured/active-duty) caretaker eventually pushes whumpee out of the fiery/crumbling location while screaming angrily at whumpe to just fucking go because whumpee is insisting on staying with caretaker and getting out together.
Whumpee is shaking and crying, and they keep looking back as they actually heed to caretaker's command, running breathlessly to the rescuers' makeshift station where the officers/agents are debating to launch the explosives to the location, maybe because there are too many whumpers/the site is too dangerous to be let standing/whatever.
When whumpee finally reaches the station, they beg the officers to hold off until caretaker is out, flailing and crying to slap and pull the officers' hands away from the explosive control panel. Finally the other officers hold them down while the one manning control panel looks at whumpee sadly and pushes the launch button.
Whumpee freezes, eyes wide and mouth open in shock, while the boom and fire of the explosion are drowning their consciousness in the background. They don't realize the tears flowing from their own eyes as they keep staring at the launcher in disbelief. The officer keeps saying, "I'm sorry, whumpee, I really am. I didn't want to either, but we had to do it. I'm truly sorry."
"Caretaker is still in there, caretaker is still in there," whumpee whispers and chants over and over again with shaky voice while the rescue officers are looking mournfully at whumpee. Eventually, whumpee snarls at the launcher and jumps to them angrily, "CARETAKER WAS STILL IN THERE, YOU BASTARD. HOW COULD YOU DO THAT?!!"
They have to be restrained again so that the officer isn't injured badly, although the officer themself doesn't fight whumpee because they also feel extremely guilty for following protocol, even if it's for the greater good. As time goes on, whumpee starts flagging, knees buckling while sobbing devastatingly instead, the voice drowning the makeshift station as the officers and other rescues are mourning along with whumpee.
"Caretaker was still in there, why did you do that? They were still in there. They should have been out with me," whumpee keeps sobbing. The night goes on, filled with regret and grief.
Maybe, against all odds, caretaker will limp out of the rubbles still breathing and whumpee will run out to embrace them and scream for the rescue officers to help caretaker. Maybe, after the fire is snuffed out and the dust has settled, whumpee will have to watch the rescue officers dragging out caretaker's lifeless body.
Who knows. Only time will tell.
